Year 6

Spotlight on Learning

Bethlehem Community

Dear Families,

Each week is extraordinarily busy now, as we fly towards the end of our time together. Students continue to engage in focused teaching while also completing end of year assessments, in and around our end of year commitments.

OUR LEARNING:

Religious Education:

Students are learning to understand the meaning of the first week of Advent and how the theme of hope prepares us for the coming of Jesus. We described how we can prepare our hearts during Advent and created something that symbolized the hope in our own life.  Isaiah 9: 2-6, was the scripture used as it links to the theme of hope.  It was discussed with relation to the Time Period, intended Audience, political situation, religious & social culture and the message of hope:

  •  A great light will shine on people living in darkness.
  • God will send a child a future king who will bring peace, justice, and restoration.
  • This promised child symbolizes God’s long-term plan to save and guide His people.

"Can You See Me" is coming to it's conclusion.  Our lead character Tally is finding the transition to High School Challenging until a new friend arrives on the horizon.  Aleksandra and Tally are beginning to get to know each other as Tally's old friends have made some unwise choices that hurt Tally's feelings.  Memories have been collated as the students looked through photographs and chatted about their favourite memories of teachers, broken bones and funny stories.  Our newer students were able to share their favourite memories which were compared and contrasted with St Thomas memories.  Next week students are getting ready to publish their persuasive works by proof reading and editing their work while providing feedback to a classmate.

Mathematics:

This  week students continue their unit about Data and Location. Students have completed end of year assessment tasks throughout this week as well.  This week and next, students are learning to perform transformations of shapes to create geometric patterns. They are learning and practicing to correctly rotate a shape 90, 180, or 270 degrees around the origin on a Cartesian plane.  Then they are accurately identifying and recording the new coordinates of each vertex after rotation. Students are Creating geometric patterns by rotating, reflecting, or translating a shape on a Cartesian plane. Then they are Performing multiple transformations to build repeating patterns and combining different transformations to create more complex designs (tessellating patterns).  In this exploration they will learn which shapes can easily tesselate while others will not.

Integrated Studies:

This term's topic is 'Taking Charge of my Health'.  This week the students were evaluating the risk of a situation in online and real life scenarios.  Risk is about the chance that something could cause harm, how prepared we are to deal with it, and whether there’s any real benefit or reward. Some risks, like starting a new business or trying a new sport, might be worth it because we can learn or gain something. Other risks, like jumping from one balcony to another, have no useful benefit and can cause serious harm, so they’re never worth taking. Students identified how they could stay safe in a range of situations.

Social & Emotional Learning:

This week we are learning to use inclusive and collaborative play to lift the mood and and build a sense of social support. Collaborative games can help people to mix and to strengthen social connectedness, which helps to protect mental wellbeing. Structured play can assist those who are anxious in social situations to participate with their peers. Games can also be used to advance social and emotional skills.
