Year 5

Spotlight on Learning

Bethany Community

Dear Bethany Families,

This week, our Year 5 students participated in the Kids ROAR protective behaviours session. We were incredibly proud of the maturity and thoughtful participation they showed throughout the workshop.

The session revisited key protective behaviours, students also explored what respect looks like in relationships and why consent is an important part of keeping themselves and others safe. A major focus of the workshop was online safety. Working in small groups, students examined a range of digital scenarios and discussed how to recognise unsafe behaviour online, how to respond, and who they can go to for help.

We are also continuing to gear up for camp. This week, students were shown our camp social story, where they learned more about the activities, expectations, their roommates and their activity groups. We will keep discussing camp routines and details over the coming week to ensure all students feel prepared and ready for camp in Week 9.

Next Week

Religious Education:

In Religious Education next week, students will be learning about how Jesus fulfilled Old Testament prophecies through his birth. Working in pairs, they will research facts about one Old Testament prophet and explore scripture passages that show how Jesus’ birth connects to and fulfils these prophecies. This learning will help students deepen their understanding of the Christmas story and its significance in the Catholic faith.

English:

Next week in English, we will continue reading our class novel The Last Bear and exploring new vocabulary from the text. We are getting close to the end now, and we are all eager to find out what will happen to Bear and April.

At the sentence level, students will continue applying their learning about connectives and practise expanding their sentences for greater clarity and detail. At text level, they will be revising and editing their persuasive letters using a checklist, before publishing their final drafts.

Mathematics :

Next week, students will begin a short statistics unit where they will plan and conduct their own mini-investigation. They will learn how to design clear survey questions, use Likert scales or simple star-rating systems to collect data, and think carefully about what information they want to find out. Students will work individually or in pairs to create a small survey, trial it with classmates, and prepare their data for graphing in the following week.

Integrated Studies:

We are learning to understand what mental health concerns are. We are discussing strategies that can help, and we are exploring how these strategies help individuals and communities. As part of this learning, we are also looking at coping strategies and identifying the difference between healthy and unhealthy choices.

Social & Emotional Learning:

Our SEL lessons this week will focus on helping students understand what safe and respectful behaviour looks like. Students will explore the behaviour they are entitled to expect from others so they can feel safe, and how they can treat the people in their lives in ways that help keep everyone safe.

Through scenarios and role-plays, students will also practise help-seeking, including how to ask for help confidently if they or someone else experiences behaviour that feels inappropriate, unsafe or uncomfortable.

Auslan:

Next week, students will continue with their end-of-year assessments and revise previously learned signs. They will also be practising their Auslan using a rock, paper, scissors signing game, which will help them revisit and consolidate the animal signs they have learned this term.

Reminders

HATS - During term 4, school hats are mandatory.

As students’ bodies and minds continue to develop, it’s important they start the day well-nourished. We kindly ask families to ensure that students come to school having eaten a healthy breakfast. A nutritious start to the day helps students maintain focus, energy, and a positive attitude throughout the morning, particularly during the first two hours of learning when concentration is vital. Thank you for your support in helping our students be ready to learn and do their best each day.

Reminder for students to bring in forks or spoons with their lunch.
