Grade 3 and 4

2 Weeks To Go.......ACMI excursion!
"The Wild Robot" is a children's novel by Peter Brown about a robot named Roz who awakens alone on a remote island and must learn to survive by adapting to the wild and befriending the animal inhabitants. The story explores themes of nature versus technology, family, and what it means to be human, all while being a heartwarming and action-packed adventure. We are loving reading the book and can't wait until we watch it on the big screen at ACMI!
Maths
Students explored the concepts of location and direction through hands-on mapping and navigation activities. Outside the classroom, students worked collaboratively to give and follow directions, using precise mathematical language, to guide their peers to specific points in the school grounds. This activity encouraged critical thinking as students interpreted spatial information and communicated it clearly. To extend their learning, students also enjoyed a classic game of Battleship, applying their understanding of coordinates and grid references in a playful and strategic context. Through these experiences, students developed both their spatial awareness and their ability to think logically and critically about location, position and movement.
Inquiry
Our Year 3 and 4 students have been having a fantastic time combining creativity, collaboration, and technology in their latest inquiry and digital technologies project — designing their very own Minecraft Biome Worlds! Working in small groups, students have explored diverse environments —from Savannahs to Aquatic —learning about ecosystems, sustainability, and design thinking along the way. It’s been wonderful to see their imaginations come to life as they problem-solve, build, and share ideas in a fun, interactive, and educational experience that truly brings learning to life in the digital world!
Hooptime Regional Final
Congratulations to our Grade 3/4 All-Star Girls.
This week, they competed in the Regional Finals at Nunawading Basketball Centre. The girls had a fun day out, and off the back of a training session with Michelle Timms showed great determination and sportsmanship. Thank you to the parents who came along for the day to support the girls and to Will for coaching.
Our Grade 3/4 Future Star Girls are in the State Finals - Thursday, 4th December. We wish them the best of luck.
Mrs Eastwood's Japanese Adventure
While on long service leave I was lucky enough to go to Japan. While in Japan, I had the opportunity to visit a Japanese school - The Hirakata Municipal Taguchiyama Elementary School. I was able to teach two grade 5 classes, showing them the size of Australia and how small Japan is in comparison. We discussed the population size of both countries. The Japanes students were curious about Australian schools and animals. They were very surprised that the Australian children bring lunch of sandwhiches from home as they have a cooked meal for lunch each day. They were also amazed that children at our school have swimming pools in their own homes - definitely not something that happens in Japan. The Japanes students knew about koalas and kangaroos and were eager to learn about the platypus and wombats.
We presented the school with a greeting from Andersons Creek Primary School, an Australian map and some classic picture story books - Diary of a Wombat, Wombat Stew, Possum Magic, Snuggle Pot and Cuddle Pie and Are we there Yet ? (about travelling around Australia). They were delighted with the gifts. We were then invited to the Principals office. He was keen to hear about the differences between Japanese and Australian schools. It was lovely to see that children in both countries are curious, kind and cheeky.
Having put my chop stick skills to use in Japan, I brought back chop sticks for the class. They had a go at making a chop stick stand and then eating Smarties and M&M's with their chop sticks. There was some frustration, a lot of laughter and some creative ways of using chop sticks.
