Grade 1 & 2
Term 4
As part of our ongoing development and learning journey through primary school, our Grade 1 students recently took part in a fun-filled afternoon and evening of games and dinner at school! It was fantastic to see so many happy faces, teamwork in action, and friendships growing stronger as we explored, played, and learned together.

The students had a wonderful time enjoying Barnyard crafts and games, a visit from the Mini Animal Farm, and sharing Afternoon Tea and Dinner with their Grade 2 peers. A big thank you to all the staff and helpers who made this special experience possible — and to our families for their continued support!
For the Grade 2's the big day had finally arrived and everyone came well prepared for our long awaited sleepover. The day passed quickly with P.E. setting up our beds ready for the evening, an indoor lollipop hunt where students had to write a series of directions based on our location and direction unit to direct a friend to a hidden treat inside the Grade 2-4 building, farmyard stories and games. Finally we got to the afternoon when students got to enjoy their surprise activities - all based on our Farmyard theme. We had a petting farm, gumboot throwing, egg and vegetable races, scarecrow making and stories. Dinner was delicious pizza in our barn style diner and dessert was al fresco. Once the Grade 1's went home it was time to get settled in for a movie and bed. We enjoyed watching Charlotte's web and then went off to sleep to Mrs Dibb reading Charlotte's web the storybook.
Soon enough it was morning - the birds were cheeping in the schoolyard and we were starting to wake up. Packup time first with a piece of fruit to keep us going if we needed it, before a special breakfast in the STAFF ROOM and an early morning play outside before everyone arrived. As school began we watched the rest of our movie and did some quiet activities in the classroom before pickup. What a fabulous event and we all feel ready for camp adventures in Grade 3.

The Grade Preps, Grade 1s, and Grade 2 students had a wonderful time on their excursion to Edendale Farm! Students took part in a series of engaging, hands-on workshops that helped them learn about how living things meet their needs in their environments, and how the special features of plants and animals help them survive.
Some of the activities included: Students explored the world of bees, butterflies, and other insects, discovering their important roles as pollinators and decomposers. What Water Bug Is That? – A fascinating look at the tiny creatures living in and around the pond, helping us understand healthy water ecosystems. Buzzing Around – Students learned about insects that make our soil healthy and support plant growth by pollinating flowers and trees.

Throughout the day, students also enjoyed hands-on experiences with the farm animals. They held worms, fed goats, sheep, and chickens, and had the chance to play with some friendly young goats in their play pen. A highlight for many was meeting the alpacas, including a baby alpaca (called a cria). The pond and its fascinating creatures captured everyone’s curiosity, making this a truly memorable and educational day at the farm!

Our Grade 1 students have been exploring the importance of noticing and expressing emotions as we experience them. They learnt that our feelings are always changing and are important to pay attention to!
After reading Who Sank the Boat? by Pamela Allen, students investigated what happens when things become “too full” — both in boats and in our bodies. Using tin foil, they designed and tested their own boats, discovering how much weight (or capacity) each one could hold before it started to overflow or sink.
This experiment became a powerful way to understand emotions. Just like a boat that can only hold so much, our bodies can also “fill up” when we keep too many feelings inside. By noticing, naming, and expressing our emotions — or “taking some items out of the boat” — we stay balanced and afloat. Through this playful and reflective learning experience, the Grade 1 students are beginning to see how expressing emotions helps us to stay calm, connected, and steady.
