Kids Corner

Jungwoo (Year 6) has been learning in Australia and our school since the beginning of this year and his learning progress has been outstanding! In this fortnight’s Kids Corner, Jungwoo is sharing the importance of being kind, inclusive and believing in yourself, I trust you enjoy it just as much as I did and also reflect on how little acts of kindness, can make an enormous difference.
Do you remember when you were a little kid? Everything around you seemed so big, so new, and sometimes even a little bit scary. You were a tiny seed in a huge world, surrounded by things you did not yet understand. I still remember my very first day of school. My backpack felt heavy, and my heart was beating fast as I walked through the school gates.
My name is Jungwoo from 6C, and today I want to talk about how our lives are like the life of a plant. When a seed is planted, it doesn't know what kind of place it has landed in. The soil might be soft or hard, and the weather might be warm or cold. Sometimes it takes a long time before the seed even reaches the sunlight. But even in the dark, the seed does not give up.
That is just like us. In the same way, we need love, support, and kindness to grow. When someone believes in us, it gives us confidence to try harder. When a friend helps us, it makes us feel safe and valued. And when we are treated with kindness, it fills us with warmth and hope, just like sunlight helps a plant bloom.
But not every day is bright and sunny. There are also rainy and stormy days. In life, that means there will be times when we fail, feel sad, or face something that scares us. However, even in those moments, we can still grow stronger, challenges make us more mature and teach us to never give up.
When I was in Year 4, I experienced something that made me understand the importance of kindness. One day, I was playing with my friends, and I noticed a boy standing by himself, watching us quietly. He looked shy and unsure, like he wanted to join but didn't know how to ask. I decided to ask him to play with us, and he smiled and said thank you. That small moment taught me that kindness can help someone feel included and happy.
When I first came to this school in Year 6, I felt really lonely. I was not confident in my English, and I didn't have friends to spend time with. Every day, I just sat alone, wishing someone would talk to me. Then one day, a friend came up to me and started talking to me. We began talking every recess and lunch. And slowly I started to feel like I belonged. That small act of kindness meant so much to me. It taught me that even a simple “hello” can make a big difference.
In Term 3 of Year 6, I took part in a school production where I sang and danced on stage. The first time I went on stage, I felt really nervous because all the parents were watching in the audience. But as the performance went on, I got used to it and started to enjoy the moment. In the end, I felt proud because everything went well, it turned out to be much more fun than I had expected.
So, what I'm trying to say is that if you always try and think positively, you can do anything.
Well done Jungwoo and keep up the amazing attitude towards your learning and life in general – I am incredibly proud of you!
