Focus on Learning

Stage 3

Literacy

This term in writing, stage 3 has been focusing on writing speeches for either year 6 graduation or to become a year 6 school leader (persuasive and informative). The students have been focusing on one part at a time. We started by looking at examples of WAGOLL (what a good one looks like) speeches written and presented by great speakers. One of these speakers was David Attenborough, where we pulled apart the speech as a whole class identifying all the elements that made it a great speech. Using those identified elements, the students have been working on forming each paragraph in their speech one step at a time, through modelled, guided, shared and independent learning activities.

Numeracy

In mathematics, stage 3 has been revising division skills using the formal algorithm method and as fractions. The students have been working really hard to master these skills, working altogether as a whole group, working in small groups, working independently and helping out each other. This has been excellent to see. We love when we work hard to master our mathematics skills!

Sport

Stage 3 has been focusing on tennis for the start of this term and having fun practising the skills required to play a game of tennis. Hand-eye coordination is an important skill in this sport, as is controlling the racquet to alternate how hard or soft the racquet hits the ball - a skill we have been focusing on mastering. Controlling how hard we hit the ball with allow the students to control how far or short they want the ball to go. We have been practising this through challenges like 'who can keep the tennis ball on top of their racquet the longest?' by doing small to medium bounces on top of the tennis racquet. We have now moved on to using forehand and backhand hits to get the tennis ball across the net to each other.
