Space Camp

Space Camp 2025
‘From Aussie shores, our curious crew,
Off to the States for dreams come true!
To Huntsville, Alabama, they flew so far,
Chasing rockets, planets, and a shooting star!’
Ten lucky Eltham High School students joined forces with students from Montmorency, St Helena, and Diamond Valley Secondary Colleges to spend two action-packed weeks attending Space Camp. Located in Huntsville, Alabama (known as Rocket City), students lived on-base engaging in a week long program, dedicated to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
Forming two teams (with students from Costa Rica), our students thrived in a busy and challenging schedule of activities. From dynamic flight simulators that mimic real astronaut training, to underwater scuba diving exercises that replicate the sensation of working in zero gravity, every activity is designed to build confidence, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. The camp culminated in a thrilling final mission where students applied their training in a realistic spaceflight simulation, fostering leadership and collaboration under pressure. The NASA and Boeing affiliated program was established in 1982 and has produced 10 Astronauts and 2 Cosmonauts. It offers an unforgettable, hands-on learning experience designed to inspire and empower young minds.
The next stop for the group was Orlando, where we explored the Kennedy Space Centre at Cape Canaveral. Students took part in the famous Kennedy Space Center Bus Tour, which granted them behind-the-scenes access to restricted areas of this historic site. They toured the massive Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB), where rockets are assembled, and explored the very launch pads that have sent astronauts into space. One of the highlights was the Space Shuttle Atlantis Exhibit, where students experienced thrilling multi-sensory displays that vividly brought NASA’s shuttle program to life. They were amazed by the chance to see the retired shuttle Atlantis up close and learn about its remarkable missions.
Their final destination was San Francisco, where students explored the majestic ancient redwood forests of Muir Woods, toured infamous Alcatraz Island, and visited the interactive exhibits of the Science Exploratorium.
These immersive, hands-on experiences where students actively engaged in physical and experiential learning offered unparalleled learning opportunities. We connected with the community by visiting a local High School and attending an American football game. Many beautiful memories and lifelong friendships were made. This was a life-changing adventure that challenged our young explorers to push their limits, develop resilience, and ignite a passion for STEM in an inspiring, supportive environment. The tour was chaperoned by Ms Natalie Tate and Mr Michael Nicassio.
A special thank-you to Ms Naomi Edrees, who helped organise the camp, which runs every two years.
