SEPEP in Year 5
Our Year 5 students have been participating in a SEPEP program (Sport Education Physical Education Program) this term. This program is constructed around a student centred approach to physical education. This is where teachers take a step back and allow their students to be accountable and to enhance their learning through establishing good working environments through working together and collaborate on the roles and responsibilities involved. The concept behind SEPEP is for students to experience a program that reflects the real world.
SEPEP works well when a sport is chosen that the majority have not participated in, therefore in year 5 the sport chosen is Lacrosse. The students have really embraced the program. The first few weeks involve me teaching them the sport and the roles that they will need to take on during round robin sessions. These roles are - captain, team manager, coach, umpire, commentator, scorer, time keeper and media manager/public relations. Each student will get the opportunity to take on 3 of these roles during this term and then when we repeat the program next year with a different sport, will have the opportunity to try some of the other positions. All students participate in playing the sport, whatever role they choose for the week.
Below are some photos and some of the views our media managers had on what was happening in their team or perhaps on the field during their teams time to participate in off field roles. I encourage you to ask your students to talk more about what they are doing to find out about this great program.
In Lacrosse today there were lots of shouting and piles of fouls. Some people were just wandering around on the court as we are still learning the game as we go. The scores of the teams were mostly even resulting in intense matches. -Marcus.
In the first 10 seconds of the match Ollie scored an amazing goal from around half court. Then after half time Patrick from the Phoenix team scored another goal.
The Dragon team kept getting the ball out as their teamwork was too shallow.
Yet again the phoenix team scored another goal, and at the end dragon team didn't score any goals. Ben.K
The first game is vipers vs phoenix and phoenix has already gotten 2 goals while vipers have only gotten 1 goal. Vipers did think that they got another goal but it wasn't a goal because it was shot from the goal square. It has already been half time and josh from phoenix is going really well but since he has been off, the team hasn't scored 1 goal, is josh their secret to success maybe not because they just got another goal. The first game has finished that was an amazingly energetic game so. phoenix have won. - Ira
Today in PE we are doing another round-robin of lacrosse! I am proud to say I am in the team of phoenix, everyone has been doing so well and getting along. For the last couple of weeks all of the grade 5s have had the privilege to run the round-robins ourselves. It has been so much fun and we have learnt so much, as a grade 5 i am happy to say that our PE teacher Mrs Wall has made this very fun in the way she has let us go and have a try. At St James we always have so much fun. As our school model states we are learning to love and loving to learn! THANK YOU!! - Harlea
It’s a game between the Phoenix and dragons its 0-0 and its a no goal.Liam scored a goal but its another no goal. Josh runs down to score but misses. Alex takes it from out of bounds and passes its a intercept. Half time still 0-0 dragons start with it but its a intercept by josh, Liam catches it but Phoenix get it but they miss. Josh passes it down the court but it goes out of bounds. Zack tries to intercept but it goes out of bounds. Andre tries to score but misses, Josh passes but its out of bounds. Alden shoots but gets rejected by Will. Rhys goes for a shot but misses, Alden shoots but misses the end of the game 0-0. - Darcy
