Principal's Report

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Welcome back to Term 3! I hope everyone enjoyed a rejuvenating term break and is now prepared to dive back into their studies.

Learning Focus

The primary focus during the initial weeks of this term has been on reinforcing our college’s culture of excellence and achievement. Students have been introduced to new semester subjects, while year long classes have continued seamlessly. Our teaching staff remains dedicated to tailoring learning experiences for all students and are gearing up for a new phase of professional development within our Professional Learning teams. Meanwhile, our Year 12 students are intensifying their efforts as they navigate their final full term of formal education.

The Importance of Reflecting on our Learning

We are all members of a learning community and as such it is important to reflect on our learning so that we can improve and grow.

According to research by Professor John Hattie there are 3 feedback questions:

  1. Where am I going? This helps us set goals and understand what success looks like.
  2. How am I going? This gives us feedback about our progress and is often expressed in relation to an expected standard.
  3. Where to next? This feedback can help us select the next challenge and allows us to take responsibility for our learning.

Our NAPLAN results that all Year 7 and 9 parents should have received from their children, helps give us feedback to guide our students with the next steps in their literacy and numeracy development.

The subject selection process that all Year 9 – 11 students are undertaking now, is another great opportunity where students can ask these three questions to help them to focus on their future pathways.

Parent Opinion Survey

Each year the school, under the guidance of the Department of Education, conducts an opinion survey with the school community. The survey is designed to assist schools in gaining an understanding of families’ perceptions of school climate, student behavior, and student engagement. The survey is optional, but we encourage and appreciate your participation.

Our school will use the survey results to assist in identifying areas for improvement and professional development needs in the school, to target school planning and improvement strategies. The Parent / Caregiver / Guardian Opinion Survey will be open online from Monday 29 July to Friday 30 August 2024. A random sample of parents / caregivers / guardians have been selected to participate in this year’s survey.

The survey will be conducted online, only takes 20 minutes to complete, and can be accessed at any convenient time on desktop computers, laptops, tablets or smartphones.

The online survey will be available in English and 10 other languages including Arabic, Somali, Dhari. Resources are also available in additional languages to assist parents / caregivers / guardians who speak a language other than English at home. Please reach out to the school directly for survey guides in your language.

I ask you to please take the time to complete the survey as your opinions are important to us and will contribute to the future management and organisation of our school.

Please be assured that your responses are completely confidential. The survey is conducted anonymously, and it is important to us that you complete the survey as honestly as possible.

Attendance

A reminder to parents that daily attendance is important for all children and young people to succeed in education and to ensure they don’t fall behind both socially and developmentally.

  • School participation maximises life opportunities for children and young people by providing them with education and support networks.
  • School helps children to develop important skills, knowledge and values that set them up for further learning and participation in their community.
  • School helps them to make the most of life opportunities.

A child missing one day a fortnight will miss four weeks in a year, and more than a year of school by Year 10. It is important that children develop regular attendance habits at an early age. If you need support with engaging your child at school, please do not hesitate to contact the college on 9795 2366
