From Emma, Year 2 teacher

Back in time

Ancient Egypt

We have dived into Ancient Egypt. We have discovered how Ancient Egyptians built their homes, marvelled and the pyramids and Sphinx and practised writing in hieroglyphics. Students particularly enjoyed writing a secret message to their peers in hieroglyphics and having a partner crack the code. Another highlight was learning a little bit about the Egyptian gods and goddesses with students summarizing a text about their chosen god and completing a draw, label, caption.

Ancient Greece

We are looking forward to learning about another ancient civilization, Ancient Greece. Already, students have designed their own Greek vase around the theme of the Olympics! Students have also taken on the challenge of writing their own odes. It has been hilarious listening to student examples such as “Ode to Tzatziki” and “Ode to a Pizza”. We look forward to publishing these pieces onto scrolls this week.

Numeracy

We have been learning about duration and time focusing on telling the time to the quarter hour. Furthermore, we have been looking at calendars and interpreting information using them. A big hit has been the game Stop the Clock where players must roll a dice and move forward either in hours or minutes. The first to 10:30 wins!
