Years 2, 3 & 4
2/3/4 recently completed 'the marshmallow test' lesson as a way of learning about what 'self control' means (the ability to regulate one's emotions, thoughts, and behaviour in the face of temptations and impulses).
This involved a marshmallow being placed in front of them. If they could show the self-control to stop themselves from eating it before the 5 minute timer went off, they would get a second marshmallow to eat along with the first.
We spoke about self-control sometimes requiring us to redirect our thinking or distract ourselves and that this was allowed during the marshmallow test.
Most students succeeded in the challenge and enjoyed a bonus marshmallow for their troubles!
Afterwards, we talked about things they did in order to keep control (getting something to drink, reading a book, etc) so they didn't eat the marshmallow before the 5 minute timer sounded and how some of these could be used in other circumstances where self-control is needed.
Year 2/3/4 have been very busy in the last couple of weeks with lots of different activities going on. They have been learning lots of new social skills and learning what it means to be a have good sportsmanship and will be applying those skills in the upcoming Basketball Gala Day. It promises to be a great day!
Over the last couple of weeks the students have been participating in lots of different STEM activities. They have built wind powered cars, bridges that had to hold weight, and they investigated how to program the Beebots to write letters.
As part of our writing unit this term the students have been learning about what makes a good procedure and how detailed and specific instructions go a long way it helping to make sure we get the procedure done properly. To test this the students completed a barrier game where they had to draw a picture on their whiteboard and then give their partner instructions to draw the same picture on their whiteboard. The students did a wonderful job at giving explicit instructions and were able to draw very similar pictures.
