Navigating Career Pathways and Giving Back to Our School Community

As graduates of our school, each of us has journeyed along unique career paths since walking across that stage and stepping into the world. Our school prepared us with knowledge, biblical values, and skills that have guided our paths, and it’s these foundations that continue to influence us, whether our careers have progressed in a traditional, linear way or through lateral, more exploratory moves. No matter the direction, we have the privilege—and responsibility—to share our experiences and successes with the next generation.
Understanding Linear and Lateral Career Pathways
Career progression doesn’t always follow a single, upward ladder. While the traditional linear path involves steady movement up through roles in one field, a lateral career path often involves shifts into roles that may or may not involve promotion but expand skills and perspectives.
1. Linear Pathways: Moving Upward Within a Field
A linear career path involves advancing step-by-step through roles in a similar area, often growing responsibilities and expertise. For instance, someone in finance might move from an entry-level analyst to a senior analyst, then to a manager and, eventually, to executive positions. Linear paths can provide depth and stability, helping people build a powerful capability set and strong expertise in their chosen area.
2. Lateral Pathways: Expanding Skills and Perspectives
Lateral pathways, on the other hand, may not follow a strict upward trajectory. These paths involve moving across roles or industries, each bringing new experiences and competencies. For example, someone may move from a marketing role to project management or human resources, each role building their versatility. This type of pathway allows for skill expansion, flexibility, and sometimes a more fulfilling alignment with personal passions.
The Value of Both Paths
Both paths have their unique benefits. Linear paths offer growth and a well-established professional reputation, while lateral paths can provide a broad and adaptable skill set, which is increasingly valuable in today’s dynamic job market. Both kinds of experiences are crucial for building a resilient workforce—and both kinds of pathways can serve as inspiring examples for current students considering their futures.
Giving Back to Our School Community
Waverley Christian College seeks to instil hope and joy in our students, with a growth mindset. Navigating Secondary School can be tough, particularly after COVID. As alumni, we have an opportunity to give back to the College that helped lay the groundwork for our own paths. By sharing our career journeys—whether linear or lateral—we can inspire students to pursue careers that align with their strengths and passions, regardless of the pathway they choose.
Here are some ways you may want to consider supporting and guiding our students in their career journeys:
1. Share Your Story
Your career story, including successes and challenges, can offer powerful insights. Whether through guest speaking, campus career events, mock interviewing, alumni panels or virtual workshops, your experiences—whether linear or lateral—demonstrate the many ways a fulfilling career can take shape. Your insights help students to recognize the real-world applications of what they’re learning, and alumni-led sessions often feel more approachable for them.
2. Fund scholarships, offer work experience or internship opportunities
Supporting scholarships, internships, or career-building programs allows students to gain critical experience without the barrier of cost. If you are able, consider contributing financially or offering internship placements, work experience, traineeships and other opportunities in your work or business to WCC. This can be followed up by our careers team, to inform students interested in your field.
A Final Thought
No matter where our paths have led us, we all carry the influence of our school with us. Whether through the direct connections or the values instilled in us, our school has had an impact on the people we are today. Now, as part of the alumni community, we can come together to pay it forward, to open doors, and to encourage the next generation to forge their own way.
Our school community thrives when its members support one another. Let's take pride in the impact we can make. Thank you for all that you do, and for all that you continue to do, to inspire and uplift those who follow in our footsteps.
