Past Student Guest Speakers
On Thursday 27th June, several alumni spoke to the Wantirna South Year 12 cohort, to share wisdom about life beyond Waverley Christian College. In the morning, students heard from Cara Leigh (WS, Class of '11) as she shared her testimony and encouraged students to contemplate deeply, what it means to trust the Lord while navigating life's ups and downs. Among other biblical encouragements, Cara drew wisdom from Psalm 20:7, "Some trust in chariots and horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God."
Following this, we were joined by past Wantirna South students Mason Aulia (Class of '20), Tyler von Hesse (Class of '21), Josh Tang (Class of '21), Kristen Koon (Class of '22), and Edna Edwin (Class of '23). They all shared their personal experiences and answered questions specifically about transitioning from high school to university or the workplace. The highlight of our panel session was hearing how each guest had journeyed with Christ in their years beyond Waverley, with some walking straight into faith communities and others who wrestled with big questions, but later felt God was calling them home. Their genuine stories and heart for our Year 12 students to meet Jesus was deeply encouraging. The importance of alumni reconnecting with current students, and sharing their stories of faith, is incredibly significant in the life of the graduating class. Current students connect strongly with examples at school, church or in their workplaces of past students who have resolved to follow God and serve Him, beyond Waverley Christian College.
Thank you to the five alumni members for sharing your wisdom with our Class of 2024!

Alumni Farewell Band
On Wednesday 13th November 2024, Mrs Marilyn Harrison (WS Music Teacher, 1983-2017) and some Waverley Christian College Alumni from the 90's, together with their children, joined for Mr Sheahan’s Farewell Celebration. This was to recognise his 40 years as College principal and 46 years at the College in total. We led the audience in a nostalgic throwback of Chapel to honour Mr Peter Sheahan. What we wanted to represent, was the continuing generational impact and legacy of faith, hope and love that Mr Sheahan has built through his faithfulness to the Lord’s call.
Six months ago, I received a vision with a core band, lead singers, choir, dancers and flag bearers. Since then, I have tracked down alumni from 30 years ago, to put together the musical elements and rehearse our instruments, voices, actions and timbrel dance moves. As we began getting the core band together, I had another vision. This time, of a ribbon twisting and turning through the air without an end to it. The ribbon represents the stories of our lives. It was at this point that I realised that what we were doing was not about music or singing or even a choir. It was about a spiritual generational legacy and heritage of knowing Jesus. The story does not end just because we have left Waverley Christian College.
The fun part was that we managed to keep most of this a secret from Mr Sheahan. You may know that he is not a fan of surprises and would prefer to know exactly what is happening. He made multiple attempts to find out more about this secretive “Alumni Band” over the course of months. In the end, he did have a nice and meaningful surprise to see all the College kids grown up to the same age, or older than what he was when he was our Principal! We had such an anointed time, leading worship through a medley of six classic 90's worship music, from Blessed be the Rock, to the Ancient of Days to Shout to the Lord. I’m so pleased that we managed to get a timbrel representation on the night and that our own children were able to come out during the last song representing the nations, times and generations that are impacted by the College. The icing on the cake was of course, having Mrs Harrison play on the keyboard with all of us, just like she did in the good ‘ole days every single Thursday Chapel.

Quotes from Alumni in Farewell performance:
“What a wonderful night celebrating Peter Sheahan and honouring his remarkable career. It was a special time, reflecting on his dedication, faithful leadership and unwavering commitment as our College teacher and principal for 46 years. Hearing stories from past students, current and former staff, as well as his colleagues from across the country of how they have been enriched by his vision and care - it is clear he leaves behind a legacy of excellence. His Christ-centred guidance has deeply blessed us all.”
Megan Slimmon (nee Barnes) - Alumni 1993-1997
“I wouldn’t have missed this occasion for anything. There is not a person that I know that doesn’t have the highest respect and admiration for Mr Sheahan. Being a part of this project was a blessing and an honour.”
Simon Nygaard - Alumni 1989-2000
"Being part of the Alumni Band was a great privilege and true highlight for me. It was wonderful to reconnect with old friends, relive great memories and embrace all the nostalgic praise and worship hits of the 90's. What an era, Mr Sheahan! Couldn't imagine a better way to finish up.”
Emma Hughes (nee Tomasich) - Alumni 1991-2002
“I attended Waverley Christian College from Kinder to Year 12. Now, many years later, my children also attend the school. Whilst the building and facilities have changed a lot, one thing that hasn’t changed is Mr. Sheahan (in appearance or values)! It was a highlight and honour to stand with some of my siblings as well as a group of people that attended the school from the “old days” and bring back some of those old classics we used to sing in Chapel. It was a truly tremendous night!”
Shae Baxter (nee Chapman) – Alumni 1994-2007
“ I decided to be part of the alumni to pay honour to Mr Sheahan but also my grandmother Mrs Aboagye. Both of them impacted so many people's lives positively and it felt right to show the appreciation for them in a public display.”
Kobe McMechan - Alumni 2010-2017
Son of Mimi McMechan (Alumni 1900-1993) and grandson of Mrs Theresa Aboagye - (Secondary teacher, 1990-2002)
“Mr. Sheahan's retirement service gifted me with a nostalgic window with which to explore the corridors of my childhood. The legacy of faith, sacrifice and community of those that paved the way for me and generations incredibly evident. The essence of my mother everpresent. These integral threads have contributed to the tapestry of my becoming. I will forever be grateful.”
Mimi McMechan (nee Aboagye) - Alumni 1990-1993
Daughter of Mrs Theresa Aboagye (Secondary teacher, 1990-2002)
Alumnus Art Business
In 2022, I graduated from WCC and started teaching piano to children. It was a fulfilling experience, but soon, I discovered that many parents were also interested in art classes. Some parents began to ask, “Do you also teach art?” I took a leap of faith and offered one-on-one art classes at home.
What began as a small private teaching, has now blossomed into a studio that breaks away from traditional norms. I realised there were not many art classes in my area that teach Anime drawing and digital art, which is what most of my students are interested in. Moreover, I realised traditional classes often have students working on the same subject as a big class, leaving little room for creativity and freedom. So, I wanted to change that.
In my classes, students can choose what they want to draw. I keep my class sizes small to ensure each student gets personalised attention, tailored to their skills and needs. I offer lessons beyond the usual mediums, including digital drawing on iPads and anime-style art, reflecting the rising popularity of manga and digital art among young people today.
One key aspect of winky.studio is inclusivity. Many children, especially those with special needs, find it challenging to fit into traditional art classes. At my studio, I provide a welcoming environment where students can learn through methods customised just for them, also allowing parents to stay with children. Every child has the opportunity to explore their love for drawing. As an animation and game design student, I am passionate about fostering creativity and growth. Starting with just one student, I’ve expanded my business over the years, and now I’m fortunate enough to run multiple classes with growing enrollments. This year, I’ve even hired teachers to help meet the demand, allowing Winky.Studio to reach more students.
In addition to building my business and developing my website, I volunteer at my local church, teaching art to children. This has been an incredible way to give back to the community while expanding Winky.Studio. Seeing how much the studio has grown is exciting, and I’m looking forward to what is ahead!

Update on Dekker's Soccer Success
In March 2024, I was approached to play for the Sri Lankan National Soccer Team, thanks to my past experience playing for Melbourne City in the A-League, and current performance in the NPL (the top soccer division in Victoria). This opportunity marked the beginning of an exciting journey, showcasing my skills on the international stage. In May, I participated in an intensive two-week training camp in Sri Lanka before traveling to Brunei, where I played two friendly matches against their national team. These games were especially memorable as I made my starting debut for Sri Lanka. In September, our team played against Cambodia for the AFC qualifiers, playing in front of a raucous crowd of 20,000 fans. In a thrilling match, Sri Lanka achieved victory through penalties, progressing to the group qualification stage, a feat not accomplished since 1995! If successful, Sri Lanka could make history by qualifying for the AFC Saudi Arabia 2027 if they win the group stage. Here our team could be playing against the likes of the Socceroos, Japan and high-ranking countries.
In October, I embarked on my third trip, this time to Myanmar, where I played two friendly matches against the Myanmar National Team. The series was a mixed result for Sri Lanka, with the first game ending in a draw and the second in a narrow loss. Despite the outcome, these matches provided valuable international exposure. I now proudly hold six caps for the Sri Lankan National Team.
Grateful to God for these opportunities, I look forward to what 2025 will bring, both in terms of my professional growth and the chance to inspire others through my journey.
