ST JOEY'S STUDENTS TO COMPETE IN THE STATE CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS - WOW!

Tomorrow on Thursday, 18th July, Matilda Cleary and Alfred Hindle will proudly represent our sma school of St Joseph's, Sorrento, amidst the fastest 3km runners across the entire state of Victoria.  After progressing through the school event, the district event, the division event and the region event, they were set the unbelievable challenge of competing at the highest level of distance running within this state. With sister, Tahlia Cleary, in the wings, waiting for the last-minute call up (as the first emergency for this state level race having finished just one place from the cut-off) and otherwise sure to be cheering fanatically for our two competitors, everything will be hanging on their systematic preparation and their love and passion for running.  We eagerly await their results!

Huge thank you to both Jannica and Paul Cleary for the ongoing work they put into, not just the training of Matilda, Tahlia and up-and-coming talent, their son, Max, but also for all the students, including our very talented state runner, Alfred, for the training extended not only to the St Joey's students, but also to the Sorrento Primary students, some of whom also made it to Region Level.

Matilda Cleary (right) - after finishing 11th out of 78 qualifiers at Regions, she qualifies for the State Event in the lightning quick time of 12:06 sec.

Tahlia Cleary (left) - finishing JUST outside the qualifying number of Top 12, she finished in 13th place at Regions and has been named as first emergency for the State Event.

Alfred Hindle - after finishing 1st at Regions in the MC classification, he qualifies for the State Event.

WINTER LIGHTNING PREMIERSHIPS

Girls Netball - 3rd Overall (out of 23 teams)

Our Year 6 Girls Team, coached by Michelle Kollarics and supervised by Sarah Pancic, played very well all day and won all but one game in a nailbiting one-point loss to Rosebud  within their very strong 'A' Division.  As a result, they narrowly missed out on playing in the 'A' Grandfinal against a very strong Rye 'A' Team, who took out the honours on the day and will proceed to Division Playoffs. Seeing all players get equal time on the court across these sports days is what these days are all about, so I commend Michelle on her excellent coaching and also to the players: Ella, Charlotte, Billie, Anneke, Shataya, Raine, Matilda and Tahlia, who all played superbly and in good spirit!

Our Year 5 Girls team, well coached by Meesha Tindale, had a wonderful day and reallyimproved across their matches, against much older and taller students mainly from Year 6. In our Year 5 Team who played in the 'B' Division were: Maisy, Mabel, Evie N, Zara H, Indie, Edith, Harriet, Bella and Olivia. The girls finished 4th in their Division Pool.

Soccer

The Soccer team were well coached by Andy Black and supervised by Mrs Cameron and thoroughly enjoyed competing at the Truemans Rd Soccer Pitches and won one match and lost three.  Made up of Seb, Eric, Joe, Corbin, Kye, Hudson, Clarke, Hamish, Alfred, Jeremy and our only girl but lover of soccer, Evie, they battled hard and looked spendid in our Soccer Uniforms.

Boys Football - Runners-Up!

Ably coached by Stingrays Coach, Josh Moore, and supervised by Mr K, the team of Year 6s, Year 5s and seven Year 4s took to the field to compete against the best footballers of the district within each of the other nine teams. As WINNERS OF THE SMALL SCHOOLS DIVISION and overall RUNNERS-UP on the day, our players, Xavier, Sunny, Lachie, Lochie, Finn, Flynn M, Charlie W, Jack B, Jack F and then our Year 4s, Charlie M, Gus, Patrick, Flynn D, William, Alex and Otis, played their hearts out and were so impressive in their endeavour!

The organiser of the football day, Darren Luff, reported back to our PE Staff from all Phillip District Schools:

"The winners for the day were Red Hill who defeated St. Josephs in the          grand final. It was a great final to watch, even more impressive when I learnt that 7 year 4s stepped up to fill the numbers in the St Josephs team, amazing!"

STUDENT-LED LUNCHTIME COMPETITIONS - That's a Wrap - Netball Comp!

Congratulations to the many students from Years 4-6 who took part in the Lunchtime Netball Competition during last term.  The students increased their knowledge and skills of the game through their participation.  Prepared, organised and run by our Year 6 students, Tahlia, Ella, Matilda and Billie, the program is aimed at offering the students an organised activity with which to spend time with a variety of people, sometimes including their main friends and sometimes not. Along with the Lunchtime Clubs on offer, we have found that fewer behavioural and friendship issues arise when we have many activities or spaces to use with others when we have such activities on offer. Thank you so much to these four Year 6 girls and to all Year 5 and 6 students who umpired and helped out.

The overall WINNING TEAM of the competition for Term 2 2024 was the SWIFTS, made up of Matilda (captain), Xavier, Jack B, Zara H, Charlotte, Jeremy, Emme and Isabella. W, with the final score 9 goals to 3 goals.

The RUNNER-UP TEAM was LIGHTNING, made up of Tahlia (captain), Finn B, Charlie

W, Bella, Indie G, Maggie, Max, Heidi, Ryan and Vesper.

Yr 1/ 2 Soccer Comp:

We had a great response for the Yr 1/2 Soccer Comp from both the boys AND the girls, which ran for the last few weeks of Term 2.  Ably led by Seb, Kye, Lochie W, Corbin and Eric, the juniors were very keen to play for their team or to fill in where needed. There was no need to have finals as just taking part and working in a team were reward enough, with the focus being on trying to receive a SPIRIT AWARD for being a good team player, including everyone and being fair and respectful to all. See below the recipients of this prestigious award that will be presented to them by Mrs O'Shannassy at assembly next week.

SPIRIT AWARD WINNERS:

As stated above for the lunchtime netball comp, the true winners are the SPIRIT AWARD WINNERS from each match who will be presented with their certificates by Mrs O'Shannassy at the Week 2 Assembly:
