Kitchen Garden Update

Spanish Fiesta Cooking and Garden Adventures

Over the past month, our Year 3 and Year 4 students have each taken part in a cooking session to create a Spanish-inspired menu we called our Spanish Fiesta. Students worked together to prepare a delicious and ambitious spread featuring vegan paella, chickpea balls inspired by albondigas, sweet potato croquettes, yoghurt flatbreads, and potato tortilla.

Along the way, they refreshed their knowledge of important kitchen equipment such as pestle and mortars, colanders, and different types of graters. With teamwork, support from our wonderful parent volunteers, and fresh produce from our school garden (including olives, parsley, warrigal greens, and silverbeet) the students created an incredible lunch to share with their peers. There will be more kitchen and garden sessions in Term 4. A helper sign up will go out to families in Week 1.

In the garden, students explored the changing season by observing spring flowers such as calendula, daisies, nasturtium, and fruit blossoms. The native indigo plant has also bloomed beautiful purple flowers. This plant was traditionally used as a way to stun fish, making them easier to catch. Inspired by these blooms, students created their own paper spring flowers in a craft activity with their teachers.

The broad beans and snow peas are growing nicely and will be ready to harvest next term. Some students have planted strawberry plants and other seedlings in our new wicking beds while others have cared for our chickens, watered our indigenous garden, and tended to the compost and worm farms. It has been a wonderful opportunity for students to connect food, gardening, creativity, and community.
