Staying Safe Online

As children grow, it’s natural that many begin exploring the online world — using personal devices, joining group chats, or engaging with social media and messaging apps. While these tools can be a wonderful way to stay connected, they also bring challenges and responsibilities that can be difficult for young people to manage on their own.

As we go into the school holidays where students may be spending more time online than normal, we felt it was the ideal time to remind families of the best ways to help your child stay safe online.

At St Kilda Park Primary School, we regularly talk with students about using technology safely and respectfully, but it’s important to remember that most online activity happens outside of school and under the care of families. We know that students as young as primary school age can encounter content, conversations or situations online that are not appropriate or safe.

For this reason, close family supervision is essential. We strongly encourage all parents and carers to:

  • Know what platforms, games and apps your child is using
  • Check your child’s devices, messages and group chats regularly
  • Talk with your child about respectful online behaviour and what to do if something makes them feel uncomfortable
  • Remind your child not to share personal information or photos online
  • Set clear boundaries around screen time and device use

Children and young people thrive when they know the adults in their lives are involved and paying attention. Your guidance and oversight are the most powerful tools in helping your child develop positive online habits and stay safe as they navigate the digital world.
