Year 5 Update

Hello Hillsmeade families,
As we wrap up another vibrant fortnight in Year 5, we’re excited to share the wonderful learning, creativity, and celebrations that have filled our classrooms and beyond.
The highlight of the term so far has undoubtedly been the spectacular Year 5 & 6 production of Madagascar at Bunjil Place. After months of rehearsals, dedication, and teamwork, our students took to the stage with confidence and flair. The energy backstage was electric, and the performance itself was nothing short of magical. From singing and dancing to acting and supporting behind the scenes, every student played a vital role in bringing the show to life. We are incredibly proud of their courage, commitment, and willingness to step outside their comfort zones. A huge thank you to our families for your support throughout this journey—it truly was a community effort.
In English, our exploration of historical fiction continues to inspire deep thinking and creativity. We’ve been reading 1854 Eureka Boys, a novel that has sparked rich discussions around life during the gold rush era. Students have been crafting realistic fiction and poetry that reflect historical perspectives, and their writing has shown a growing maturity and empathy. This learning is building excitement for our upcoming excursion to Sovereign Hill in the final week of term, where students will have the chance to immerse themselves in the world they’ve been reading and writing about.
Mathematics lessons have taken a practical turn as we dive into mapping and location skills. Using the Sovereign Hill map, students have been learning to interpret scale, direction, and landmarks—skills that will come in handy during our excursion. We continue to encourage regular times tables practice at home to support fluency and confidence in numeracy.
We also took time to celebrate Father’s Day and Special Others Day. Students wrote heartfelt poems to honour the important people in their lives, and it was beautiful to see the care and thought they put into their words. These moments of reflection and gratitude are just as important as academic learning, and we’re proud of the empathy our students continue to show.
As the weather warms up, a friendly reminder that hats are now required when the UV index is above 3. Please ensure your child brings a hat to school each day to stay sun-safe during outdoor activities.
Thank you for your ongoing support and partnership in your child’s learning journey. We’re looking forward to finishing Term 3 with more learning, laughter, and memorable moments.
Warm regards,
The Year 5 Teaching Team
