Our Learning - Weeks 8 & 9

✍️ English

In Reading, we are enjoying Charlotte’s Web as our class novel. Through this text, we are practising a range of comprehension strategies to deepen our understanding and engagement with the story.

  • We are listening actively to the narrative and discussing what is happening.
  • We are learning to predict what might happen next in the story.
  • We are retelling the important events from the story in the correct order.
  • We are answering literal and inferential questions using text evidence.
  • We are sequencing events in order to build our understanding of plot.
  • We are spelling plural words correctly using known rules.

In Writing, we are learning how to plan and write engaging narratives by exploring strong story structure and descriptive language.

  • We are writing bold beginnings that introduce characters and setting.
  • We are writing events in order to build towards a problem.
  • We are writing the solution to our story and using dialogue correctly.
  • We are revising our writing by checking capital letters, punctuation, spelling and sentence clarity.
  • We are editing and improving sentences by fixing run-ons in our own writing.
  • We are learning how to use ‘s’ or ‘ies’ when changing singular nouns to plural.
  • We are publishing an edited piece of narrative writing.
  • We are continuing to practise our handwriting to develop neat and consistent letter formation.

Maths

In Weeks 8 & 9, we are focusing on division strategies and building our understanding of location through maps, direction, and positional language.

Week 8 - Division

  • We are learning the language of division to help us solve problems and explain our thinking.
  • We are making connections between multiplication and division using fact families.
  • We are dividing numbers by 2, 4, and 8 using halving and repeated halving strategies.
  • We are using patterns and visual models to divide numbers by 10 using scroll activities.
  • We are representing our answers using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.

Week 9 - Location

  • We are using directional language like north, south, east, and west to follow and give directions.
  • We are identifying landmarks on a map and following routes from one place to another.
  • We are creating classroom maps using a key, symbols, and a compass rose.
  • We are applying our location skills in games like Battleships to practise coordinates and directions.

🌏 Inquiry

Our Inquiry topic this term is History.

In Weeks 8 & 9, we are continuing to learn about Australian history by exploring key events and changes over time, with a focus on European settlement and defining moments in Australia.

  • We are watching episodes from My Place to learn about life in the early 1800s.
  • We are identifying the perspectives of both European settlers and Aboriginal Australians.
  • We are discussing the impact of European settlement on Indigenous people.
  • We are comparing clothing, shelter, and daily life from the past to now.
  • We are exploring important events and changes in Australia’s history using a timeline.
  • We are discussing what defining moments mean and identifying examples in class.
  • We are learning how to describe changes to Australia over time using historical examples.
  • We are working in pairs to recreate parts of the timeline using drawings, slides, or writing.

🧠 Social and Emotional Learning

In SEL, we are recognising R U OK? Day, a day dedicated to checking in with others, starting meaningful conversations, and learning how to support our friends if they’re not feeling okay.

  • We are learning who we can talk to when we need help or feel upset.
  • We are identifying five trusted people from different areas of our lives (school, home, community).
  • We are discussing the qualities of a trusted person and why talking to someone can help.
  • We are creating a support hand to show who we can turn to if we’re not feeling okay.
  • We are learning how to encourage our friends to seek help from trusted adults.

🗞️News and reminders

Drink bottles:

Please remember to bring a drink bottle to school every day. It saves disruption to your child's learning when this is accessible within the room. They are able to fill up their bottles in a nearby classroom.

Homework:

Students are encouraged to complete one or two activities from the homework grid each week for the rest of the term. Once an activity is completed, they just need to cross it off and write the date in the box so teachers can keep track of what’s been done.

Reading continues to be an important part of homework, and we encourage students to read for at least 10 minutes on 3 to 4 nights each week.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher.
