This Fortnight in Literacy and Integrated Studies

By Laani 6PW

This term all Grade 5&6 students have been working on poetry, specifically slam poems. Slam poems are poems that are spoken orally and often address a specific point or problem. All of our poems are about a social justice issue like homelessness, climate change, bullying, sexism, racism or any problem within our society. While creating their poem, students have been challenged to incorporate the following literacy devices:

  • Alliteration
  • Simile
  • Metaphor
  • Rhetorical question
  • Fact

Many students have also worked hard to incorporate rhyme in their poem.

During the end of term expo, all students will present their poems in front of you, the parents/ guardians. We are so excited to see you there so don’t miss it!

This Fortnight in Numeracy

By Daniel 6SB

Over the past few weeks, Grade 6 students have been applying their knowledge of angles to design their own mini golf course. The golf course needed to have at least 3 holes with a variety of challenging obstacles. In their design, students needed to include

  • at least 2 displays of parallel lines
  • at least two of each angle (right, obtuse, acute, reflex, straight)
  • a variety of 2D shapes
  • one set of vertically opposite angles
  • two sets of corresponding angles
  • 3 supplementary and 2 complementary angles
  • 1 transversal

Students were required to measure angles using a protractor and calculate the measure of the remaining angles. The golf course has been a great way for student to express their creativity and students enjoyed making them.

Grade 5 students also have a focus on angles at the moment, exploring:

1. Measuring angles with formal units of measurement

2. Measuring and drawing acute, right and obtuse angles

3. Measuring and drawing straight, reflex and revolution angles

4. Measuring interior angles of polygons

Leadership & KGT

By Eleanor 6SB and Deborah 6SC

Over the last few weeks, all Leadership Pillars have been busy as usual!

The Health Pillar has been creating a yearbook blurb summarising what they do, while the Environment Pillar, along with KGT members, did a great job helping Mrs Ballot run a Resource Smart PL for our staff. The Enviro Pillar have also been helping Grade 5s with cleaning out the chicken coop and caring for our animals and plants around the school. The Wellbeing Pillar has been helping students from foundation to Year 2 read books and doing their work on Thursdays. The Library and Languages Pillar has been busy organising a Care, Learn and Share activity for R U Ok Day, including preparing a slide show and cutting out speech bubbles for the activity. The Arts pillar has been super busy creating props and signs for the whole school production, ‘Superstan’.

Events

What a fun and eventful term we have had!

Over the last few weeks, many students in 3 - 6 have been busy preparing for our badminton competition, which ran from Monday September 1st - Friday September 5th. It was a great opportunity to practise our badminton skills and was a lot of fun. Congratulations to the winners, Yuna and Nethnu.

On Friday the 5th, as well as the final of the badminton competition, the Father’s Day Breakfast took place. It started at 7:30 and consisted of a stand-up breakfast and plenty of fun games to play with our dads and special people. It was an amazing morning and a great way to celebrate our wonderful parents and carers.

Other events that have taken place in the past fortnight include District Athletics (well done to all those who attended), a Leadership Conference at Balwyn High and the Grade 6, JSC and Whole School Photo Day. We are all very proud to share our SLAM poems during our end of term expo on Friday!

Next week, on Wednesday the 17th - 19th, Grade 5 students will go on their camp to The Summit, which we can confidently say will be a really fun experience!

Finally, the biggest event of the term, on Friday the 19th, Term 3 will end and we will have 2 weeks of holidays! We hope the teachers have a relaxing break as they have worked so hard to take care of us over the term! We can't wait to see what's in stall for Term 4!
