Mark Lumley’s Visit to KGT

by Daniel, Jayden, Olvin and Yuvaan

On the 21st of August, the KGT was honoured to welcome Mark Lumley. Mark is a proud Wiradjuri man, with deep cultural ties to the Wiradjuri people and Country, which is located in central New South Wales. His visit was a meaningful and enriching experience for everyone involved.

Mark began the day by offering a traditional Acknowledgement of Country, a ceremonial practice that recognises and pays respect to the traditional custodians of the land. This was a powerful moment that reminded us of the importance of recognising Aboriginal culture and the deep spiritual connection between people and place.

Throughout the KGT session, Mark generously shared his extensive knowledge of the environment, culture, and the significance of caring for Country. He spoke passionately about the importance of respecting and protecting the land, and how traditional knowledge can guide us in living more sustainably and harmoniously with nature.

Although Mark is now retired, he spent many years working as a gardener, which allowed him to connect with the environment in a hands-on and meaningful way. Retirement hasn’t slowed him down — he continues to follow his passion by educating others, sharing stories, and helping people build a stronger connection to the land.

We had an incredible time learning from Mark. His visit was not only educational but also inspiring and deeply grounding. It reminded us that knowledge is meant to be shared, and by doing so, we keep culture alive and strengthen our ties to the environment.

We are so grateful for the opportunity to learn from Mark, and we look forward to passing on what we’ve learned. By sharing this knowledge, we help to create a stronger sense of connection, respect, and understanding for Country and culture — for ourselves and for future generations.

KGT SHOWCASE

Last week, students in KGT proudly shared what they’ve been learning about caring for our environment. From animal care and gardening to media relations, the program has given them amazing opportunities to make a real difference.

A big thank you to Mrs Ballot for her support and encouragement — even Miss Efron and Mrs T learning to love (or at least tolerate!) the stick insects!

Thank you to the parents who are already regular helpers on our Thursday afternoon KGT days. Your support not only helps us achieve great things but also sets a powerful example for our students about the value of giving time and contributing to the community and the betterment of our planet.
