This Term, as part of our Calligraphy unit, the Chinese Art and Culture elective students had three workshop-style classes where they tried their hands at Chinese calligraphy and Chinese painting. In the first class, they learned how to hold calligraphy brushes properly (vertically, between the middle and ring fingers), and the basic character strokes employed in writing characters, on special practice sheets using water. In the second and third classes, students used traditional ink and rice paper to write characters with the brushes, and experimented with various dilutions of the ink to achieve different shadings in their depictions of nature.

In week 8, our Languages Captains, Michael Dollery and Natasha Sriritanakoul, organised Mahjong Day, an event where beginners and experienced players alike played Mahjong together. The event was well attended, and we’ve even had requests for more Mahjong Days. Thanks to Michael and Natasha for making this event happen.
