Thrills and Spills: Marist Shines at the 2025 Interschool Karting Competition

The roar of engines and the buzz of excitement filled the air at the Ipswich City Dirt Kart Track in Willowbank as Marist College Ashgrove proudly hosted the 12th annual Interschool Karting Competition, and what a day it was! With seven schools, 125 students, and 21 karts tearing up the track, this year’s event was the biggest and most successful yet.

Marist entered the competition with three standout teams, each sporting karts inspired by iconic racing brands: Monster Energy, Shell Helix, and Red Bull. Each team of five students took part in practice and qualifying sessions, which determined their race categories across five thrilling heats.

The competition was fierce, and the new points system introduced this year made for an incredibly tight contest; the top four schools were separated by just a single point each! Despite the pressure, Marist students rose to the challenge, securing 2nd and 3rd place overall, a testament to their skill, teamwork, and determination. Our third team, despite facing mechanical issues with a broken chain that forced them to miss a race, still managed a commendable 15th place finish.

A huge congratulations to all our students for their outstanding performance and sportsmanship throughout the day. Special thanks go to Dan Lawler from Mr Tuning and Mechanical, Yatala, whose expert engine maintenance kept our karts running smoothly from start to finish.

Of course, none of this would be possible without the dedication of our staff. A heartfelt thank you to Mr AJ Gray, Mr Peter Ward, Mr Blair Whitlock and Sister Deb McDermott, whose support, logistics and care ensured the day ran safely and seamlessly.

We’re already looking forward to next year’s event and with the trophy just out of reach this time, you can bet Marist will be back with even more drive to bring it home!
