This term has seen an extensive range of opportunities for our students in the Arts
We are thrilled to announce that three of our students have been awarded prizes in the 2025 QATSIF (Queensland and Torres Strait Islander Foundation) Creative Arts competition.
3rd place – Year 9 Painting section – Antwone Davidson-Alberts
1st place – Year 10 Ceramics – Kila De Busch
1st place – Year 10 Collage – Anthony Yunkaporta
Congratulations Antowne, Kila and Anthony. We are very proud of your achievements.
The boys will be presented with their awards on assembly.
Earlier in the term, Year 9 Visual Art students visited the Brisbane Powerhouse to view the World Press photography exhibition as part of their current unit of work, “The Captured Image”. Last week the class also experienced an incursion on still-life photography with guest photographer Dr Joachim Froese. Joachim shared his expertise in photography and the students developed their skills in lighting and composition. They also learnt how, through the use of items and objects, stories are able to be created and how an item in one culture can mean something very different in another. A valuable and insightful time was had by all and the students were able to create their own stories through minimalist still-life photographs, which they will develop further into still-life paintings using acrylic paint on board.
The Year 10 Visual Art students began the term with an artist talk and street art workshop with guest artist Mark Paddick as part of their “Youth Culture” unit. In the workshop, students began to develop large-scale canvases with layers of collage, stencils and text. We look forward to seeing the end result as they work towards completing their canvases which will then become the base for an animation task.
As part of their unit of work, “Art as Code”, Year 11 students had the opportunity to experience a presentation by John Graham on the art of collecting. Previously a scientist, John shared his wealth of knowledge on how his love for collecting turned into a full-time job where he is now self-employed, buying and selling various collectibles and pop culture items through auctions and online avenues. Students are currently developing a range of artworks, including photograms, cyanotypes and pin-hole photographs for their experimental folios, taking inspiration from vintage comic books and pop culture objects.
During Week 7, students were able to take part in arts activities across the college during breaks and after school, which included live performances, workshops, a Music Kahoot in the primary school and culminating in the finale on Friday with live bands, a sausage sizzle, our resident DJs playing Music in the yard and the final day of the Uplift Project workshops which saw students putting the finishing touches to small canvases which will be up for sale in the Tower Art Show. 100% of the proceeds from sales will go towards the Champagnat Trust. Any students who are creating an artwork for this worthwhile project are asked to drop their finished canvases into the Art staffroom by Monday 8 September.
Thank you to everyone (students, parents, relatives and all in the Marist College community) who entered our annual photography competition, ASHCam. Judged by professional photographer, Dr Joachim Froese, all sections saw some fierce competition with the incredible talent from members of our college community. Congratulations to all of our winners. Presentation of awards will take place on Assembly in the coming weeks. (Winners will be notified of assembly details via email.)

This term in Art club, students have been honing their painting skills, commencing the term with a workshop in paint pouring, where they made some coasters and panels with free-flowing designs in acrylic paint. The Games workshop also began this term and has seen students with an interest in D & D and Warhammer meet each Tuesday afternoon. They have been painting figurines and involved in various role plays campaigns across the term. The final Art Club and Games Workshop session for Term 3 is Tuesday 9 September.
