Sport News

Mr Derek Lennon

Term 3 is racing by with only a couple of rounds left. On Saturday we travelled to Ipswich to play St Edmund’s College. The 1st XIII had a strong 18-4 win on a windy day not conducive to playing rugby league. Overall we won 10 wins 2 draws and 2 losses. In tennis the 1sts won 8-0 and we swept the day with 14 wins and no losses. In basketball, an undermanned 1st V went up against a strong SEC and accounted for themselves very well, going down 87-67. It was a lot closer than that with the margin being 6 points late in the third quarter. Overall we won 25 matches and lost 4 in a strong day for the basketball program.

Last Thursday night we had our first AIC track and field meet of the season. Some strong performances from Marist boys on the back of two full days at QSAC for the Met North championships highlight our strength in depth. Thank you to Mr Richard Graham, supported by the track and field staff, for a huge week last week. Well done to all boys who made the Met North team for the upcoming state championships.

This weekend we are playing against Villanova College which will be a big challenge for all of our teams, something we are looking forward. The senior teams in tennis and basketball and most rugby league fixtures are at home this weekend.

Our open hockey team well took on St Edmund’s College for the third year in a row in the grand final of the Brisbane Schoolboys competition last Wednesday. Unfortunately, after a thrilling match ended 2-all, SEC took the title in a penalty shootout. Well done to the boys for a great season. Thank you to Coordinator Ms Kathryn Badini and Coach Isaac Pratt for your all your hard work preparing the boys.

The football season also came to a conclusion last Wednesday when the 1st XI lost 2-0 to BBC in the semi-final of the Uhlsport Cup competition. A top 4 place is a great achievement in this open competition involving AIC, GPS and state schools from across SE Queensland. Well done to the boys on a fine season overall and thank you to Mr Blair Whitlock for coordinating and Mr Whitlock and Mr Willem Baines for coaching the 1st XI so well.

Integrity and Fair Play in School Sport

Following on from last week’s newsletter piece on dealing with adversity, this week I am looking at sportsmanship in a school context.

Sportsmanship, an essential aspect of competitive sports, encapsulates the spirit of fairness, respect, and integrity in athletic endeavours. It is the glue that holds the values of sports together, ensuring that competition remains a positive and enriching experience for athletes, spectators, and society at large. This article delves into the significance of sportsmanship, its core principles, and its impact on athletes and communities.

At its core, sportsmanship embodies the ideals of ethical behaviour, respect for opponents, adherence to rules, and graciousness in victory or defeat. It's more than just playing by the rules; it's about maintaining an attitude of respect, empathy, and humility throughout the sporting journey. True sportsmanship extends beyond the field of play, influencing personal growth, social interactions, and the larger sports culture.

Core Principles

  1. Respect for Opponents: Sportsmanship emphasizes the recognition of the efforts and skills of opponents. Treating opponents with respect fosters an environment of healthy competition and camaraderie.

  2. Fair Play: Adhering to the rules and regulations of the game is vital. Displaying honesty and integrity, even when it might lead to personal disadvantage, demonstrates the true essence of sportsmanship.

  3. Humility: Whether celebrating victory or dealing with defeat, humility is a central tenet of sportsmanship. Acknowledging the role of hard work, practice, and teamwork over individual achievement contributes to a well-rounded sports experience.

  4. Grace in victory and defeat: How athletes handle success and failure speaks volumes about their sportsmanship. Celebrating wins with modesty and accepting losses graciously highlights a deep understanding of the transient nature of sports.

Sportsmanship has a profound impact on athletes' personal development. It instils values that extend beyond the playing field, including empathy, resilience, and discipline. When athletes prioritize respect and fair play, they contribute to a positive sports culture that encourages inclusivity and sportsmanship among peers.

Moreover, embodying sportsmanship can enhance an athlete's mental resilience. The ability to stay composed under pressure, accept defeat with grace, and persevere through challenges is a testament to an athlete's character and sportsmanship.

Promoting sportsmanship requires a collective effort from athletes, coaches, parents, and staff. We all have a part to play in making sure the boys develop their capacity to be the best people that we can be.

Sportsmanship is the lifeblood of sports, infusing the playing field with integrity, respect, and fairness. Its principles enrich athletes' personal development and foster positive communities centred around shared values. By actively promoting and nurturing sportsmanship, we contribute to a sports culture that thrives on the ideals of mutual respect, healthy competition, and the pursuit of excellence.

Hockey - Ms Kathryn Badini

Last Wednesday we played the Grand Final in the Schoolboys Cup against St Edmund’s College. What unfolded on Wednesday was a great showing from our boys with each player contributing their all. Indeed, while we have some champions in our team, we are also a champion team, and this was put to the test when we were one-nil down after a short corner by Eddie’s. Keeping our cool, Matt Alvarez (Year 10) scored to equalise. Then in the last seconds of the first half, St Eddie’s received another short corner and scored, making the result 2:1 to them.

With the Hive now at capacity on the sidelines, the second half was when our team really came into their own, with Lincoln Stockwell (Year 11) scoring in play to again equalise and us having the majority of the possession. However, despite our best attempts, the game was drawn 2-all then and we went to penalty shoot-outs.

In a Hockey penalty shoot-out, a player has 8 seconds to score from the 25-line mark. It’s pressured situation for both the player and the goalie. Unfortunately, Eddie’s came out victorious with the game ultimately going to them.

It was a disappointing moment given the momentum of the season and also the build up of the game. Unfortunately, that is both the beauty and cruelty of Grand Finals. The leadership of the Year 12s really shone through in this moment, however, in gathering the team and reminding them of what they’ve achieved despite the lost, as well as selflessly wishing them well in future years.

I would like to thank the students who came out to support. There was a great crowd, most of whom knew nothing about Hockey but were very happy to cheer along for Marist. I would also like to thank the Hockey parents who are always so supportive of the team and myself.

Lastly, I would like to acknowledge the Lunn and Cabot families, with their last son in Year 12 now means that they have played their last Marist hockey game. The Cabot family now has had four sons come through the team, a legacy that has now lasted over 15 years now. They are really the heartbeat of the Hockey program and it’s hard to imagine a Marist team without a Cabot in it.

As Hockey wraps up for another year, I would like to extend the team’s best wishes to the other sports, particularly the Year 12s who will have their last games in the blue and gold.

See you in 2026!

Rugby League - Mr Lachlan Gough

Last Saturday we faced St Edmund’s College out at Ipswich. The conditions were challenging with strong, gusty winds and hard playing fields, but our teams were able to adapt well to record a number of very impressive wins.

The 1sts played well into the wind in the first half to go in 6-0 in front. We extended the lead to 12-0 before Eddies scored a try midway through the half to reduce the margin to 8. A nice try in the last 10 minutes secured the win 18-4 in a good solid hit out from the team, with all players contributing to the result. Well done to Coach Mr Brad Winchester, staff and players.

Overall, we had a good day against St Edmund’s, with 10 wins, 2 draws and 2 losses. The secondary school team of the day was the 8As who won 72-0, and the Primary team of the day was the 5Bs, who defeated Villanova 7Cs by 40 points to 8. Well done to all our teams on the day.

Marist Program Objectives

Every team to be top 3 in their division and the program to be 1st or 2nd in the aggregate. All First teams to be competitive, aiming for a premiership at least every 3 years.

Every boy develops a love of the sport through their experience at Marist. That we provide opportunities for boys to develop skills, represent the College and play with their friends.

Every boy develops life skills through playing sport. These include being a member of a team (with boys they may not be friends with), setting goals, dealing with adversity (including being dropped, disagreeing with a referee decision), learning how to win with grace and lose with dignity and respect, and challenge ourselves to get out of their comfort zone.

Basketball – Ms Samantha Davids

Round 6 of the basketball season saw our teams take on St Edmunds College in a series of exciting and competitive matches. Across the board, our teams delivered strong performances, with several teams securing solid wins and continuing their impressive form.

Some match highlights include the convincing victories, for 7Cs, 11Bs, 9As, 9Cs, showcasing excellent teamwork, defensive pressure, and fast-paced offense. Our 11Ds and 8Bs, 8Cs maintained their winning streaks. With just two rounds remaining these teams and several others are beginning to stand out as undefeated contenders a testament to their hard work and dedication.

A huge congratulations to three debutants for the First’s this week; Sam Mapledoram, Aidan Marshall and Finn Cusack, who got a run wearing the gold jersey. Their time on court was seamless with Finn scoring 6 points in the first few minutes of his time off the bench.

This week we host Villanova, and it is the indigenous round. We have some special guests and appearances by some of our indigenous students to mark the occasion, please take the time to come and support your fellow students at our Welcome to country 11:00am at The Tower.

As we approach the final stretch of the season, the focus will be on maintaining momentum, refining strategies and our commitment to training attendance. These rounds are home games so let’s get buzzing and build that hive on Saturday for our 12:15pm First’s tip off.

Please note that there is no training for teams on Friday due to student free day or games. Primary rounds will be played on Thursday afternoon.

11B - Jane Wilcox

A big 62-17 win today by the 11B lads in a game played in great spirit against an opposition that never stopped trying. Our third-quarter defence, in particular, was outstanding keeping the Eddie‘s team scoreless in that time period.

MVP Archie Powell was outstanding at both ends of the court, his tenacity in defence causing lots of trouble for the opposition. Fellow MVP Ky Campbell showed his doggedness in not only stealing the ball repeatedly from the opposition offence but also making good use of his speed to bring it down the court. Riley Waldon also had a great game and Charlie Wilcox’s free-throw work paid off with 100% for him from the line.

Up by 20 points at halftime and 38 points at three-quarter time the focus today became winning with Grace: showing respect to the opposition at all times; no showboating; no alleyoops; no humiliating the opposition; no trashtalk. I’m pleased to say the team stepped up to the challenge. The lads in this team are great young men … certainly great leaders in the making … and they showed this today by their actions on court. Well done team!

7D - Patrick Hooper

The boys demonstrated great teamwork and communication to come out of the game with a dominant victory. They were respectful to the other players and officials who were doing their best in running the game. Furthermore, they showed great variety in skills when both attacking and defending, with some very impressive individual and team moments taking place throughout the match. This level of sportsmanship has been demonstrated over the course of the season thus far, with the boys showing great enthusiasm towards the Marist basketball program.

9C - Sam Noble

The 9C Basketball team had an amazing day against St Edmunds College, coming away with a massive 44-25 win over our opponents. I was really impressed with the team's attacking flair, aggressive defensive style and ability to make it rain from the deep mid-range and three point line. Credit to Isaac and Xavier for spreading the floor and taking smart shots. The MVP for the game was Elliot Hagen, who displayed an all round performance, scoring at the rim and applying pressure on defence. The boys are fired up and ready to continue their winning ways against Villanova College this Saturday.

First Captain Match Report – Jacob Cook

On Saturday, we faced St. Edmunds College in a tough matchup, falling 87-67. With three starters out, our roster looked brand new, yet this was one of our best games. Younger players stepped up, facing St. Edmunds’ relentless offense and sharp three-point shooting with grit and heart. Despite challenging calls and their aggressive press, we stayed composed, delivering strong defensive stands and smooth offensive plays. The young squad’s resilience and teamwork shone through, proving their potential. Though the score didn’t favour us, our growth was evident. With 2 games left this season, we’re determined to keep pushing and finish strong.

Firsts Report - Round 6 vs St Edmund's College - Mr James Lymer – 1st V Coach

Round 6 in Ipswich shaped up to be one of our toughest challenges this season. With Eddies sitting second on the ladder and three of our starters out, it was a fantastic opportunity to showcase our depth, resilience, and team-first mentality. Our game plan was clear: execute the fundamentals, minimise turnovers, stay disciplined in the halfcourt, and bring intensity to every defensive possession. With a next man up mindset, we embraced new lineups and rotations, and I was genuinely impressed by the energy and engagement from the entire group throughout the game. We started strong, closing the first quarter ahead 19–16. In the second, we found better offensive rhythm and created easier scoring opportunities, trailing by just six at halftime, 45–39. A renewed focus on ball pressure in the backcourt helped us push the pace and generate transition chances. Our ball movement against their zone also improved, keeping us well within reach at the end of the third, 66–57. Credit to Eddies for their final quarter surge. A few costly turnovers and missed opportunities on our end gave them momentum, and they capitalised with some clutch three-pointers. Despite the result, there were plenty of promising signs of what we’re capable of as a unit. As we head into the final stretch of the AIC season and prepare for the CBSQ Tournament, this game serves as a valuable stepping stone in our development and belief as a group.

Cricket

With summer approaching, we are getting prepared for the cricket season. Our Marist Cricket Academy program kicks off in the upcoming holidays. Swimming

Mr James Boyce - Director of Swimming

As we approach the final weeks of Term 3, preparations are underway for the return of swimming in Term 4. All students wishing to participate must be registered via Parent Orbit.

This season, our focus is on two key values: consistency and discipline. Consistency in training will strengthen our performance as a team, while discipline will help swimmers remain focused when fatigue sets in and decisions become more difficult. By committing to these values, every swimmer contributes not only to their own improvement but also to the success of the team as a whole.

Swimming remains free in Term 4 and Term 1 for Marist students who are part of the training squads. In addition, swimmers are welcome to join our Barracudas or Marlins squads at a discounted rate.

Marist Track and Field | AIC Practice Meet #1

As a coach it was wonderful to see athletes who had competed for two days at Met North back up on the evening of Thursday 28th for AIC Practice Meet #1 to record a time or distance in their events. Those athletes who did not quite make met north were also attending in good numbers again with some excellent times and distances showing Marist will remain competitive this year in the search for an 11th AIC title.

Not too late: It should be noted there are many AIC squads pushing to take our mantle so I encourage all athletes to run and record times.

Even if you have not attended training to date, to come down and record a time or distance as we always welcome new athletes  if they would like to try out for the AIC team. All Marist school students and prospective athletes are very welcome

Some good performances: Some of the best performances from AIC Practice Meet #1 included -

  • A sub-11 second hand time for Isaac Ting
  • An 11.4 time for Bob Ackerie growing in confidence in his sprinting
  • 13 Years – At least 5 of the squad recording sub 13s 100m times which is excellent at this time of season
  • Fynn Barrett a big PB in the 400m and a fast 100m in 12 years
  • Finn Elphinston throwing 24m+ in the javelin

  • Elliot Aldridge throwing a 42m+ throw in Open Discus

  • Owen Hair throwing his best over 12m in shot

AIC Practice Meet #2 will be this Wednesday and we look forward to an even larger turnout with our Met North contingent returning.

In 2025, despite athlete numbers being down overall, Marist athletes won a total of 66 medals with 36 medals gold. As a qualifier for the QLD Schools Sport State Titles, due to the State Titles being in Townsville some school teams decided to send reduced squads but the quality of performances from the Marist team was a testament to the training efforts of this team. Tennis - Mr Andrew Ward

Welcome to this week’s tennis news as we enter the final stretch of the AIC Championships with just two rounds to play. Our Seniors will finish the season with two home matches – a fantastic way to close out the campaign.

Over the past few weeks, our teams have continued to show real growth in both game styles and match tactics, setting themselves up well for the weekly challenges. That progress was on full display last Saturday against St Edmund’s College and ATC (who kindly filled some year-level gaps).

Our Year 10 and Primary A teams faced ATC and came away with strong wins in all matches. Even more impressively, every Marist team from Year 5 through to Opens recorded victories — a clean sweep across the board, giving us a much-needed lift on the points table.

This week, we face Villanova College, where we can expect some tough contests across many year levels.

Teams still undefeated:5A, 5B, 6A, 6B, 8B, 10B.

Good luck to all teams this weekend!

Captain’s Report – Hamish Davidson

This week we took on St Edmund’s, winning 8-0. Our doubles pairs set the tone early with convincing wins across all four sets. We then carried that momentum into singles, where every player won without dropping a set. We look forward to the Villanova clash, hoping to continue this winning form.

Super Grade & League Tennis

Some very tough matches last round, with a couple of heartbreaking losses but also some great wins. Keep competing, keep improving, and keep enjoying the battle! Round 8 sees all four teams playing away.

Season 1, 2026 – Get Involved

We’re aiming to field 12 teams for Competition 1 starting in February. Adults, Old Boys, and students are all welcome. Returning players will also receive a free clinic to help get back into the swing of things.

Weekly match play against different opponents is the best way to sharpen your game, cut down errors, and develop a strong match style. Gather some mates and get a team together!
