Terrific 2

Term 3 Week 9 2025

Dear Parents, Carers, and Students

What have we been up to?

In Literacy

We have had a fun and engaging term in Literacy, starting with our deep dive into Scientific Reports and now finishing with Readers’ Theatre. Earlier in the term, students took part in hands-on experiments, including a heart rate investigation and creating an erupting volcano! These activities helped them learn how to record their thinking like scientists using a structured writing format:

Question → Hypothesis → Materials → Procedures → Results → Conclusion

More recently, students worked in groups to write their own scripts for Readers’ Theatre, which they performed this week. We were so proud to see how this unit helped all students develop fluent reading, expression, and pace while working collaboratively and creatively.

👉 There will be no readers sent home this week, as we are collecting all books in preparation for a fresh start in Term 4. However, spelling words have been sent home, and we ask that all students focus on practising these carefully this week.

The Syntax Project is a way for students to build their knowledge of how sentences work. We focus on word order, grammar, and how ideas are connected so that students can become stronger readers and writers. Through the project, students practise recognising different sentence structures, creating their own, and applying this understanding in their everyday writing. It helps them become clearer, more confident communicators.

In Phonics, we have been continuing to build our knowledge of the fszl (floss) rule. We have also been working hard on the rules around using -ck, -tch and -dge with additional learning that focuses on the ‘Silent Final E’ in words.

In Maths

Students have been learning about calendars, exploring dates, months, and how to calculate the time between two events. They have also begun investigating different types of data and how to organise it effectively. Building on this, students came up with their own questions to collect data and then recorded their findings in a chart, developing both their analytical and organisational skills.

Students have had a busy and productive term in Maths, covering multiplication, division, time, calendars, and most recently, collecting and interpreting data. They have now completed their post-tests and will spend this week reflecting on their results, celebrating their successes, and identifying areas to improve.

Science In Science, we are exploring Biological Sciences. We are learning about living things—what they need to grow and survive, and how they change over time. Students are engaging in observations and discussions, and we have a super fun hands-on project coming soon—stay tuned!

Leader in Me and Respectful Relationships:

Each student has chosen a personal academic goal focused on handwriting. After reviewing their writing books, students selected an area to improve—such as letter formation, spacing, or neatness—and will track their progress across the term.

Our 2A classroom WIG is focused on behaviour in specialist classes:

“By the end of Term 3, we will be able to track the speaker and follow expectations in specialist classes. Our goal is to show positive behaviour in at least 7 out of the 9 weeks.”

Our 2B classroom WIG is focused on whiteboard routines:

“By the end of Term 3, during learning time we will follow the proper whiteboard               routines, hover it, chin it, park it and clear it.”

Now that we are at the end of the term, students will be reflecting on their WIGs, reviewing their progress, and celebrating their successes while considering areas to continue improving. We are so proud of the ownership and reflection they have shown throughout Term 3!

Home Readers and Spelling Words

Just a reminder: 📚 Home readers are changed every Monday. Students receive two books to practise throughout the week. Re-reading these texts supports fluency, comprehension, and confidence.

📖 Please continue to log all reading in your child’s reading diary

Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or would like to discuss your child’s progress.

What’s Coming Up in Year 2

This year the Grade 2 students have been linking their inquiry lessons to Indigenous culture.

To support students in their learning, we are very excited to advise that we have planned a school excursion at the Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne on the 23/10. We have organised for the kids to participate in the Shared Country program where students will discover the importance of the environment to the Bunurong / Boon Wurrung People and their connection to Country and explore how plants can be used for fibre, medicine, tools, and food.

Additional Information:

Students will get a bus there in the morning so please be on time to school that day. Please bring Fruit Snack and Lunch in their bag, a drink bottle.

Important reminders:

  • All students must be wearing a hat in Term 4. Please ensure your child comes to school each day with a sun-safe hat to protect them while outdoors.
