Prep Team News

with Caitlin, Hayley & Andrea

Hello Prep families,

We cannot believe there are only four weeks left of school! Over the past two weeks, in addition to all the great learning going on, students have begun attending swimming lessons. We are so pleased with the way the Preps have taken the swimming program in their stride and demonstrated what wonderful Willy Kids they are by using manners and showing respect to the teachers, swimming instructors and parent helpers. The Preps are certainly getting very tired with all the activities we have going on. It is very normal at this time of year that your child may be feeling more emotional at home. We are sure they are looking forward to a well deserved summer break!

School Disco

Last Thursday, the Preps attended their first ever Williamstown Primary disco. The teachers loved seeing all the students in their wonderful outfits and accessorising with colourful glow sticks. We were particularly impressed with all the amazing dance moves. Please enjoy some photos from the event.

Christmas Performance

On Friday the 8th of December (Week 10), the Prep students will be performing a Christmas song at our whole school assembly.  The students have started learning the song at school, but we would very much appreciate it if you could also find some time to practise at home too.  (The car is a good place for a sing-a-long!)  Your child should have brought home a copy of the lyrics last Friday.  Here is a link to the song as well, which you may like to use:

On the day of the performance, the Prep students are welcome to come to school wearing a Christmas t-shirt and/or accessory. For example, you may like to wear:

  • A Christmas themed t-shirt
  • A red, green or white t-shirt
  • Some form of headwear (e.g. Santa hat, reindeer ears or Christmas headband)

If you are available, we would love for all of our Prep families to come along and watch our performance. The assembly will commence at 2:40pm either in the school hall, or outside in front of the library.

Buddy Ice-Creams

On Wednesday the 13th of December, an ice-cream van will be coming to Willy Primary! This is an opportunity for Preps and their 5/6 buddies to enjoy a treat together and celebrate the special friendships that they have developed this year. There will be more information on this to come.

Curriculum Focus: Weeks 7 - 8

Reading - Students will explore the features of non-fiction texts including the contents page, index and glossary. As part of our Little Learner’s program, students are now beginning to learn other common sounds including digraphs and trigraphs. Our current focus being long vowel sounds including /igh/ and /ie/.

Writing - Students are continuing to learn to correctly form letters and use their sound knowledge to write sentences. Further, students are using their knowledge of non-fiction texts to summarise information.

Numeracy - Students are exploring the concept of sharing by using materials to share items equally between groups. We are also investigating what happens when we cannot equally share items between groups, resulting in leftover / remaining items.

Inquiry - This term, our inquiry topic is What do living things need to survive? Our big topics will include: What are living things and how do we know they are living? What do different things require to stay alive? How can we help these things stay alive? Do living things need to be in the right place to stay alive?
