Montessori Cycle 3

Old Melbourne Gaol

On Wednesday, the 15th of November, the Cycle 3 classes boarded a bus and drove to Old Melbourne Gaol, on 377 Russell St. We went to the Gaol as part of my Great Work. It was quite exciting going there with all my classmates. A tour guide greeted us at the entry and we set off into the Gaol’s interior. We explored all levels of the Gaol, from the third floor, to the first. I loved learning more about the history of the Gaol, and how it was built. The tour guides really painted a picture of how the prisoners lived and some of their daring escapes.

After the tour, we all had a snack in the courtyard together and then walked to the courtroom for a mock trial of Ned Kelly. All of us got roles to play, and I got to be Ned. Sadly, if you didn’t know, he lost the trial and got sent off to get hung on the gallows.

After the big courtroom drama, all students strolled back to the courtyard for a hearty lunch with our fellow peers. Later, everyone gathered their things and patiently waited for the bus to arrive. We got on the bus and drove the 30 minute drive back to school, where everyone took their bags off the bus and went into the gates to enjoy the rest of their time outside and attend lunchtime commitments.

It was an experience I’m sure most people will remember for the rest of their lives.
