A Change to our Language Other Than English (LOTE) Program

I wish to inform you of an upcoming change to our Language Other Than English (LOTE) program for the next academic year. Unfortunately, we have encountered challenges in securing a suitable part time Indonesian teacher to share the teaching role with Bu Glenda for the 2024 school year. In response to this, we have made adjustments to provide an enriching language experience for all our students. Starting next year, Grade 1-6 students will alternate between studying Indonesian (with Bu Glenda) and Auslan (Australian Sign Language) on a semester basis. Additionally, Prep students will focus on Auslan for the entire year. While we understand the initial adjustment, we believe that learning Auslan carries numerous benefits. Not only does it foster inclusivity and empathy, but it also enhances communication skills and promotes a deeper understanding of diverse communities. We are excited to announce that Deb Williamson will be our Auslan teacher. We appreciate your understanding and look forward to the positive impact this change will have on our students.

Teacher v Student Games

Over the last fortnight at Mitcham Primary School, the much-anticipated annual teacher versus Grade 6 student games have brought an exhilarating burst of energy and camaraderie to our campus. The athletic showdown featured intense matches in netball, frisbee, volleyball, and basketball, showcasing the impressive skills and teamwork of both teachers and students. The highlight of the week was the thrilling volleyball match, where the Grade 6 team managed to secure a victory, marking the sole triumph for the students against the formidable teacher opponents. The games not only provided a platform for friendly competition but also fostered a sense of school spirit and unity, creating lasting memories for all participants. Kudos to both teachers and students for their competitiveness dedication throughout the games!

Community Evening

Mitcham Primary School's 'Summer Splash' Community Evening made a splash of success with an incredible turnout of enthusiastic parents, students, and community members. The highlight of the evening was the amazing art show, where the creative talents of our students were showcased in vibrant displays that captivated everyone. The entertainment segment, featuring performances by our talented students, added an extra layer of excitement and joy to the event. A heartfelt thank you goes to all the dedicated teachers whose hard work and commitment made this night such a resounding success, with extra special thanks to Miss K, Miss McFarland and Miss Harris. It's through collaborative efforts like these that our school community thrives, creating memorable and enriching experiences for everyone involved. Well done to all who contributed to making the 'Summer Splash' Community Evening a night to remember!

Fabulous Fundraising Efforts

I am extremely excited to announce that our school fundraising efforts this year, led so wonderfully by Aysha Rowe, have raised a total of $7500 – this is an amazing effort and tribute to our very generous school community. These funds have contributed to the purchase of some beautiful new outdoor furniture (as pictured). We have chosen these very special pieces from a range called “Caring for Country”. The furniture features breathtaking art by award-winning Indigenous artist Brett Parker and celebrates rich Indigenous history and culture. It will provide our school with a wonderful resource to connect around and to enjoy, learn and explore Indigenous art and culture.

“Caring for Country” was the theme chosen by Brett to represent through his art. This concept explores the sustainable land management practices that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples undertake, and the key role these practices play in continuing their culture.

Brett is from the Wiradjuri mob of Murrumbidgee River people. He is an award-winning Indigenous artist with a strong passion for teaching Indigenous art, culture and history and has been working as an artist and educator in schools and organisations for over 30 years.

Upcoming events

To all our wonderful parent and friend volunteers, we do hope you will be able to join us for a thank you morning tea in the hall this coming Monday 11th December at 11.15 am.

We also extend a warm invitation to all our friends and families past and present for a special afternoon tea commencing at 3.30 pm on Friday 15th December to celebrate the incredible career of our retiring assistant principal Mrs Wood.
