Connect: Level 1

Weeks 9 and 10

Welcome to Weeks 9 and 10 of Term 4! We can't quite believe we are almost at the end of 2023 and our not so little cherubs will be off to Level 2 soon! We will miss these kids dearly but we know they are all ready to move on up to Level 2.

Celebrations!

Students have been really interested in writing their own comic books during Investigations. Some are so enthusiastic that they are taking their work out at recess and lunch times and even working on their comics at home! We love the enthusiasm!

During Maths we have been working on place value and renaming. Our MAB game has been a hit as we try to get to the highest number!

This term we have a focus on Health. We have been learning about healthy eating and what it means and also about what exercise and fitness means. Last week, students designed their own fitness program and then had to get some friends to complete their exercise program. Lots of elevated heart rates after the exercise!

Upcoming Learning

Maths: Data

In mathematics, our students will dive into the fascinating world of data representation

through hands-on exploration using objects and drawings. Embracing this interactive approach, every object or drawing will represent a distinct data value, enabling our young learners to grasp mathematical concepts in a visual and tangible manner. Our aim is to strengthen our students ability to interpret data while promoting an appreciation for the real-world applications of mathematics in their daily lives.

Health

In the upcoming two weeks, our Health curriculum will focus on vital topics that impact our students' understanding of the world. Firstly, we'll delve into the crucial realm of safety, empowering our children with knowledge and skills to navigate various safety aspects in their lives. Following this, we will embrace a celebration of diversity and differences. This topic continues to be an important discussion across our society and across the globe. We will encourage our students to appreciate uniqueness and foster a sense of being inclusive. We encourage your support and engagement in these discussions at home to reinforce these valuable lessons in our children's learning journey.

Science: In Science we have begun exploring light, the students had a blast searching for their work books in the dark using a black-light and highlighted pictures in their work books. Week 7 and 8 are sounding like they will be very exciting lessons as they will be continuing to learn about light. There is going to be a focus on shadows, and the students will also be creating a very special light illusion toy. We look forward to hearing even more about their learning in the coming weeks!

Spelling

New Phonemes for weeks 9 and 10:

  1. /ou/ as in out and ouch- at the beginning or in the middle of a word.
  2. /ow/ as in slow- at the end of a word. Also /ow/ as in cow, at the end of a word.

Literacy

Over the next couple of weeks, students will be learning how to create a persuasive text based on the mentor text 'Daisy Eat Your Peas' by Kes Gray and Nick Sharrat, then have a chance to create their own. They will learn strategies on how to convince others of different topics by using strong reasons and evidence. We will be having discussions on how to select appropriate adjectives to assist in the persuasion process and learn how to use commas and dot points/numbers when listing things or reasons.

Students will also be learning the skills involved when writing a procedural text (steps in how to do something). Throughout this learning, there will be a strong focus on sentence structure and punctuation.

Reading fluency, vocabulary and expression will continue to be a focus throughout the next couple of weeks for the level 1's. As you can see in the picture to the right, they are important components in building optimal comprehension and good readers.
