St Vinnies

St Vinnie's were excited by the donations  received from Homerooms, but during this week we spent another $640 on rice, longlife milk, cereal and pasta and dropped it off to them (thanks maintenance guys) from those of you who donated at the canteen during the Solidarity Mass week.  Their shelves were already filled by the first lot of donations, now they are overflowing.

Congratulations everyone and a heart felt thankyou.

Year 10 Painting and Printmaking - Serigraph

The following artworks are from the Year 10 Painting and Printmaking students.

Students researched an issue of their choice to create a two-colored silkscreen print on a fabric bag. Using this print, students skillfully and creatively reworked this image to create a mixed-media artwork.

More artworks will be on display at the Art/Technology exhibition on Friday 18th October.

Jam Sessions - Student Wellbeing

Every Friday during May, the Atrium was abuzz with the sound of Jam Sessions.

Jam Sessions was an open-mic style event run by the Youth Services team at the City of Greater Dandenong.

Each week a huge number of students from Years 7-12 signed up to perform and share their talents in front of a lively and supportive audience. The students who performed were also lucky enough to walk away with a movie ticket!

The Jam Sessions were a great success, well done to all our talented students!

Music Camp

Recently our Music students embarked on our annual three-day trip to Warburton and surrounds. As part of this trip, they visited Millwarra Primary School and performed songs for the students and staff to enjoy.

Student reflection:

Music camp is a great way for music students to create bonds within the faculty and to practice even more! During camp, we had fun by practicing as a whole group, hiking up the Warburton Rail, exploring the town, and spending time together during game nights!

It was a wonderful experience to meet new people and create memories with younger and older students who share the same passion for music.

Thank you to Ms Addis, Mr Hickey, and Mr Vague for creating such a memorable experience that none of us will forget!

Year 10 Drama

Last week the Year 10 Drama class participated in the Drama Victoria Connections Festival.

The class devised an original performance in response to an Artwork called Shades by a local Indigenous artist, Christinaray Weetra.  The play challenged notions of everyday racism and sent an empowering message about accepting your identity.

The students presented their work along with other schools at St Bede's in Bentleigh East. The assessor from Drama Victoria gave feedback that said the Killester performance was 'thoughtful and provocative' and that the students should feel very proud of themselves!

Congratulations to the Year 10 Drama class!

Flower Making

Year 12 students, Lily N and Annabelle T, took on an opportunity to mentor a Year 9 Textile class to teach them the skills of ribbon flower-making. Individually, each student set about making their own flower that would then be included in a class bouquet.

The end result was amazing. Well done students!

Year 7 Personal Development Day

Student reflection:

Year 7 students had their first Personal Development Day. We were asked to wear casual clothes, appropriate for the activities planned for the day.

To begin our day, we all gathered to talk about friendships and how they can change throughout school. We watched our camp video again and this was a perfect example of how some of our friendships have expanded or changed since. It also reminded us of all the good memories that we shared as a cohort.

Next, we all set off to the theatrette where we watched an interesting and educational play, performed by the Playground Craze. They talked about the different ways we could be safe online and in real life, what to do and what to avoid. We enjoyed dancing, singing along and listening to the advice they gave us.

During periods 3 and 4, we got into small groups and were given different scenarios to act out the proper way to react to the situation.

At lunch, we were all encouraged to bring a portion of food for our shared lunch. It was great fun! St. Elizabeth and Bridid had a shared lunch next to EJ the cat and the other Homerooms Nano Nagle and Mary Magdalene sat together near Tullow, whilst Cathrine Macaulay and St. Martha sat right next to the atrium where the jam sessions were happening.

After lunch, we split up into pairs or groups of three to make friendship bracelets for each other. After this, we did a dance session with Dance Mob and finished the day by writing positive affirmations for one another to celebrate all the great personalities we have in Year 7!

We all really enjoyed this PD Day and are looking forward to more days like this in the future!
