Magistrates Court Excursion

Earlier in May, Year 11 Legal Studies students participated in an excursion to the Melbourne Magistrates Court. During this excursion, students were able to speak with a Magistrate about our legal system and were invited to observe different court cases currently running within the court.

Students were able to see first-hand the types of cases and crimes heard within the court and the different factors that lead people to committing crimes. They were also able to witness how our legal system responds to the challenges and difficulties faced when considering the most appropriate sanction for those whose circumstances have played a large part in their offending.

It was invigorating to see the keen interest and aspiration students demonstrated through their thoughtful observations and questions of the legal process. It has provided great context for the work students have been focusing on during class. I would encourage anyone interested in our legal system to attend the Melbourne Magistrates Court to observe these cases.
