Assistant Principal's Report

Classwork and Assessment

Teachers post daily lesson plans on COMPASS. We encourage both students in attendance and those who are absent to check COMPASS for lesson outlines and activities.

We also encourage parents and students to continue to check Compass Learning Tasks, which will contain feedback on Assessment Tasks. Core Subjects will provide feedback on a minimum of 3 assessments per semester and other subjects will provide feedback on 2 to 3 assessments per semester. Our Semester Reports will contain a summary of progression but the detailed results and feedback is available on the COMPASS Learning Tasks. This allows you to monitor how your child is progressing throughout the semester rather than only at the end and it also allows teachers to upload an assessment rubric where applicable. Please do get in touch with us if you would like assistance with accessing your child’s feedback.

Year 10 and 11 Exams

Year 10 and 11 students will sit Semester Exams in the last few weeks of this term, with Year 10 commencing in Week 9 so they can get feedback before heading off into Work Experience in the last week of term, and Year 11 in Week 10 to coincide with the end of Unit 1 coursework. More information about exam preparation and timetables will be published on COMPASS.

The General Achievement Test (GAT)

The General Achievement Test (GAT) will be held on Tuesday 18th of June. As well as providing students an opportunity to demonstrate they meet the Victorian Literacy and Numeracy Standards, the GAT plays an important role in the quality assurance of VCE assessments.

Who sits the GAT?

Both Sections A and B

Students enrolled in one or more VCE or scored VCE VET Unit 3–4 sequence, including:

students not planning to undertake scored assessment

students who have met the literacy and numeracy standards in a previous year

Section A only

Students enrolled in one or more VCE Vocational Major (VM) Unit 3–4 sequence but who are not enrolled in any VCE or scored VCE VET Unit 3–4 sequences.

An English/Bilingual printed dictionary and scientific calculator is permitted in both sections of the GAT- students are reminded to bring their own calculator. Students should attempt every question in Section A and B of the GAT.

There will be more information in FLT sessions shortly (Tuesdays period 5) and on COMPASS. Please also see link below for more information.

Attendance

Keeping up a full-time attendance is important to ensure continuity in learning and opportunities to gain teacher assistance.

The VCE and VCE VM courses are demanding and rigorous. A lot of material is covered each day and catching up after absence can be challenging. If your child at VCE or VCE VM level is absent for a period of time- more than two consecutive days- it is advisable to contact your child's coordinator to provide a reason for the absence and to discuss supports that can be put in place to assist the student in catching up after the time away. At VCE, students must present a medical certificate if they miss a SAC task due to absence and sit the SAC task at another scheduled time.

Uniform

As the weather turns colder, it is important for students to ensure that they stay warm but also to wear the correct uniform. Students like to wear items such as hoodies, but they are not part of the school uniform, and if caught wearing them, the hoodies will be confiscated and a detention will be issued. Students wanting to wear the school scarf will need to purchase this at the uniform shop. Also, a reminder that students should be wearing the correct uniform, either full academic or full PE uniform on the correct days.

Wellbeing and Disability Inclusion

Disability Inclusion

Professional learning was provided for all staff on how to translate IEPs and LSPs into changes in teaching, learning, and assessment. This was very well received, and we are hopeful it will make a significant impact on the learning and sense of inclusion for students at Greensborough College. Additionally, the college employed extra Classroom Support to ensure that both funded and some non-funded students received the support they needed in their learning.

Mental Health Practitioner

We are pleased to welcome Merinda Brown, our new Mental Health Practitioner (MHP). Merinda will be working in various capacities based on the needs of our school. Her role includes:

Mental health prevention and promotion

Short-term support for students, including direct counselling

Coordinating support with other services for students with complex needs

IDAHOBIT Day

IDAHOBIT, the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia, and Transphobia, was observed on May 17th. It is dedicated to raising awareness about the discrimination and violence that LGBTQIA+ people still face around the world. We ran several events and programmes in recognition of IDAHOBIT Day. Connect and FLT classes delivered presentations, and we set up three supportive spaces throughout the school: in the wellbeing centre, the library, and the study centre.

Facilities

D-Wing Improvement

Work on the D-Wing continued throughout the beginning of Term Two. The majority of the work has been completed, and we are currently reinstating all equipment in the automotive and manual technology rooms.

Undercover Seating

New undercover seating has been installed, and it looks fantastic. This provides shelter for students at recess and lunch in our MP plaza area.
