The College Co-Curricular

Who's who at MCHF - written by Sienna Mekary

Co-curricular activities supplement the formal academic curriculum by offering students chances to delve into their interests, acquire fresh skills, and expand their perspectives. These activities go beyond the traditional classroom setting, encompassing a wide range of experiences that contribute to the holistic development of students.

Duke of Edinburgh

24 bleary-eyed yet eager Duke of Edinburgh Bronze and Silver Award participants, have embarked on their Adventurous Journey at Camp Somerset in Upper Colo. With hearts full of excitement and nervous  anticipation,  the students were ready to challenge themselves  and embrace the beauty of nature.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all who have made this journey possible. Thank you, Sr Margaret , Miss Chalhoub, Mr. Abbood, Mr. Gharrach, Miss Taylor, and Mr Cunningham, for your unwavering support.

A great journey full of dedication, courage and skills! The Duke of Ed Award encourages and supports our young students to build resourcefulness and develop important and relevant life skills outside the classroom.

🌟THE JOY OF ACCOMPLISHING THE UNTHINKABLE! Their smiles say it all!!!🌟

We are immensely proud of MCHF's first-ever Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh participants, making history this week! They hiked up rugged and incredibly steep mountains, leaving an unforgettable impression of resilience, teamwork and determination 🎉

DAY ONE: Upon arrival at camp Somerset, participants were instructed on how to use a topographic map and what to bring in a rucksack for a lengthy hike. The first day, in accordance to the instructors, was a test run consisting of a 4km walk along strenuous trails to assess if anything required changing and to ensure sure everything went smoothly. This provided participants the opportunity to consider their level of satisfaction and happiness with all of their equipment and how the next big day will roughly proceed.

DAY TWO: Day 2 consisted of an extremely challenging mountain hike of 14km. Participant were instructed to navigate without the help of instructors using their new set of skills of analysing a topographic map and applying their knowledge in an outdoor and physical setting. With the use of teamwork and positivity this group was able to successfully accomplish a day of doubt, struggle and a rewarding journey.

DAY THREE: Last day of camp! With a wrap up of 6km on day 3 leaving participants with feelings of rewarding accomplishment, we proudly acknowledge the constant strive for completion and productivity regardless of getting pushed out of their comfort zone. These students not only completed this adventurous journey as individuals but as a team. As they generated a positive team environment and generated ways to occupy themselves through conversation and Simon's singing (which either inspired them to sing along or conveniently pushed them to finish the hike to avoid them) we were able to conclude a 24km hike!

Primary STEM Day

A big thank you to all primary staff, including support staff, who ran or supported any activity today. It was excellent to see all students engaged in the lessons. This is a testament to the effort all the teachers put in. It was also great to see a few parent helpers in the classrooms, assisting with the activities.

A big shoutout to Ms Sharbeen for her assistance in the classrooms, as well as for organising her year 9 STEM students to support activities.

Student Testimonies

Bakhos Bou-Francis (6 Emerald): ''STEM Day is my favourite day of the year! It allows me to be creative, problem-solve and also have fun at the same time. My favourite activity today would have to be the 'Foil Boat' where as a group we had to create the boat in a way that it wouldn't sink once we placed marbles in it. We made the boat out of foil and folded it into a rectangular shape so that the water wouldn't flood over the edges. It was really fun this year!''

Sophia Bosheh & Christian Sorbello (2 Jade): ''STEM Day was fun because we got to do different activities. Our favourite activity was when we built a crocodile, house and tractor using LEGO. This was fun because we could work in groups to follow the instructions. We also loved going on Minecraft to build animal habitats.''

Maths Olympiad

The first Maths Olympiad was held in Secondary in Week 2. As usual, it had very challenging Mathematics problems to solve.

Annalise Khoury Yr 8, Maribelle Abdulahad Yr 8 and Angelina Khoury Yr 8, all achieved an impressive 4 out of 5.

Thank you to Mrs Sen for volunteering to coach the 2024 team.

We wish them continued success in all 4 Olympiads this year.

Providence Program

Congratulations to the 37 students in Year 11 who commendably completed 15 hours of service-learning for the Providence Program in term 1. These students were presented with their Bronze Award and Certificates of Completion for demonstrating their Maronite Values and serving others in a variety of contexts. Students kept a Providence Journal which required them to reflect, grow and pray as they performed a variety of good works for others.

Term Two - Wellbeing Wednesday

On the 29th of May, the College celebrated Wellbeing Wednesday. This runs every Wednesday in week 5 of the term. It was a day filled of crazy hair, hats and socks. Our staff started of their morning with the Cancer Council's Australia's Biggest Morning Tea followed by a MCHF flower mural to honour all those in our community who have been impacted by cancer. The PA generously donated items for our bake stall, and the social justice leaders and house captains ran various trivia and sporting games during break times. It was a day filled with many emotions, but we are very lucky here at MCHF, that our community is able to unite together to create memorable experiences for all involved.
