Culture Day
It was an amazing day - the school was certainly full of excitement as we celebrated all of the different cultures here at Modbury School P-6.
We began the day with a community assembly and were thrilled to welcome so many families who were able to join us for the morning. We thank our Aboriginal learners who delivered the acknowledgement of country with the support of Mrs. Young. We then heard about the different cultures which make up our school community, and there were at least 25 listed just in our enrolment paperwork. Some of our very talented students then gave a demonstration of a traditional Indian dance, which they worked on with Deepa.
After the dance we invited all students who had worn traditional/national dress to participate in a fashion parade, and we enjoyed seeing the many different styles of clothing on the day. Thank you for supporting your children in wearing traditional dress on the day- the children really enjoyed sharing this part of their culture with us.
After assembly, students moved back to their classes and visited the two stations throughout the day. The first station was outside at the Yarning Circle. Mrs. Curtis worked with classes and led them in a yarning activity where they unpacked the meaning of a community, and what it was to belong. They also gave their cooking skills a work out, as they made damper and potatoes in the fire pit, with the support of Steve our groundsman.
The second station was held in the STEM space, where students participated in food sampling. They moved around the area to build a tasting plate from around the world. Some of the food on offer were:
Ireland- potato
France- croissant
Australia- fairy bread
Sri Lanka- coconut rice
India- chickpea curry
China- spring rolls
Turkey- hummus and pita bread
Greece- tzatziki
Japan- tea
While students were enjoying their food, they also had the opportunity to have a hena tattoo done. The students really enjoyed the day, and it was great to see them all getting involved.
