World Oceans Day - Saturday 8th of June

Saturday the 8th of June is World Oceans Day. A day that is recognised around the world to protect and conserve ocean life.

Did you know:

* Our oceans cover 71% of the Earths surface.

* The oceans help to regulate our climate (the weather).

* The number of species that exists in the ocean is unknown - we are still exploring.

* The oceans help clean the oxygen we breathe.

This week Hillsmeade PS took part in a range of ocean themed activities in STEM and in the classroom from creative and persuasive writing, colouring in, ocean animal research, exploring and recreating the 5 layers of the ocean, ocean animal constructing and building and using recycled materials to think about ocean plastic.

Students also had the opportunity to enter the $1 sea creature lolly guessing competition - with funds raised going to the Dolphin Research Institute.

What can you do to protect the oceans?

What we do on land has an impact on the oceans. If litter is dropped on land it can often be carried away down storm water drains straight to the ocean, so not polluting the land can make sure the oceans stay clean.

When visiting a beach make sure you don't take anything home with you, except any rubbish. Ocean creatures, shells, plants and vegetation are not to be disturbed - be careful where you walk and always stick to the path.
