Bethlehem Community
Dear Families,
It’s been a wonderful week, filled with rich learning experiences and exciting opportunities for our Year 6 students.
Don't forget the children are invited to wear their favourite sports team or clothing to school on our last day for Term 3 - Friday 19th September.
Congratulations to our award winners:
Religious Education Focus:
This week, students worked in groups to design a board game that will encompass their learning throughout Religious Education this term and will continue to work on the game until the end of term. They will be demonstrating their knowledge on the Passover, the Last Supper, Eucharist and Scripture we have been reading over the last few weeks.
English Focus:
Reading:
Students were introduced to new Greek base word chron, which means “time”. They explored how these roots form words like chronology, chronicle, and chronicler. Separately, students practiced using vocabulary from their class novel Once in their speaking and writing, helping them improve their language skills and deepen their understanding of the story.
Writing:
Students learnt about narrative structure and cohesive language devices that help make writing and speech clearer and more connected within narratives. They explored techniques like similes, metaphors, imagery, and dialogue to link ideas smoothly and add emphasis throughout narrative writing. Through various activities and examples, students practiced using these devices to improve the flow and coherence of their writing, making their communication more effective and engaging.
Mathematics Focus:
This week, students learned how to convert between different units of measurement for mass. They practiced moving between millilitres, litres, kilolitres, and megalitres using place value knowledge and multiplication or division by powers of ten. Through hands on activities and real-world examples, students developed confidence in choosing appropriate units and accurately converting measurements.
Integrated Studies Focus:
Students continued learning about the physical changes that occur for both boys and girls during puberty. They explored how physical changes are a normal part of growing up and affect everyone differently. Discussions focused on why it is important to develop healthy physical habits during puberty and how they can develop healthy positive hygiene habits. The learning helped students feel more informed, confident, and respectful of themselves and others during this stage of development.
SEL Focus:
Students continued to explore gender equality and how the media and social media can have an impact on social norms. Students engaged in thoughtful discussions about how they have witnessed these impacts and what they can do to help. They worked in groups to perform some role play scenarios and develop strategies they can use within social situations where these gender norms can appear. This deeper understanding encouraged critical thinking and empathy toward creating a more equal society.
Auslan Learning Focus:
Students continued to practice their Auslan sign knowledge they have learnt over the past few weeks. They are also identifying how signs around the world are 'iconic'; meaning they represent what they look like/do.
