School Wide Positive Behaviour Supports (SWPBS) - Building a Positive Culture: Our New Behaviour Expectation Matrix

At Keysborough Secondary College, we know that a strong school culture is built on shared values and clear expectations. Over the past term, our Engagement Team has been working closely with staff to develop a Behaviour Expectation Matrix that captures the spirit of our three core values (Respect, Excellence, and Diversity) and translates them into practical, everyday behaviours.

The matrix is designed to be a clear guide for our whole school community. It outlines what our values look like in action across all areas of college life – in classrooms, in the yard and common spaces, in the wider community, and in digital spaces. For example, respect is treating all members of the school community with consideration and kindness. Excellence is having high expectations for ourselves and trying our best. Diversity is celebrating and appreciating different cultures, traditions, abilities and perspectives.

This important work forms a key part of our School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) journey. Developing the matrix is the first step. Next term, students will be invited to provide feedback and ensure their voices are included in shaping the behaviours we want to see across the college. Following this, the Engagement Team will lead the work of developing definitions and examples of key behaviours. These will help us address issues more consistently and support all members of our community to understand what positive behaviour looks like in practice.

The Behaviour Expectation Matrix will soon become a central tool across our college. It will support teachers in setting consistent expectations, give students clarity, and help families see how our values are brought to life each day. Together, we are creating a culture where respect, excellence, and diversity are lived in action.
