Leading Teachers Report

End Of Term 3 :

Junior School Report

As Term 3 draws to a close its important to reflect on our student achievements and ensure we finish the year off in a positive manner.

Our Year 7 and 8 students have been living our College Values of High Expectation, Respect, Responsibility, Resilience and Teamwork throughout the Term. It was wonderful to see so many of our Junior School students be part of our production of Newsies Jr, both on stage and as part of the back-stage crew. A huge congratulations to all involved and a special mention of our Year 7 Leader Ms Hoernel who once again did a great job leading the production.

This week our school held the annual Spring Concert which show-cased the musical talents of our students and again it was great to see so many of our Year 7 and 8 students there on the night. We certainly have a talented group of students at South Oakleigh! During the last week of this term we held our Year level assemblies. I would like to congratulate all the students who were proud recipients of a HRRRT certificate.

I would like to wish our community an enjoyable and restful break and look forward to all of our students returning ready to hit the ground running in Term 4.

A reminder that our Summer uniform is to be worn on the first day back, with our blazer being worn to and from school.

Middle School Report

At South Oakleigh College, we are proud to celebrate the achievements of our students who consistently exemplify our core values and excel in a range of disciplines. Their hard work and dedication inspire us all. Several middle school students have demonstrated success over the past few weeks.

I’d like to acknowledge the following students:

Jack Wright (Year 10) – Norman A Smith Scholarship Recipient

Jack Wright has been awarded the prestigious Norman A Smith Scholarship. This scholarship recognises a student from the Monash area who is expected to make significant contributions to the lives of all Australians. Jack’s leadership, academic excellence, and commitment to service makes him a deserving recipient. We are incredibly proud of his achievement!

Costa Houdalakis (Year 10) – Division 1 Ice Hockey Success

Costa has recently returned from Sweden, where he made a Division 1 Ice Hockey Team. Costa has previously represented Victoria in the sport, and this latest achievement is a testament to his skill, perseverance, and passion for ice hockey. He will be returning to Sweden over Summer to continue playing with the team, and we wish him the very best of luck!

Max Owen Johnston, Charles Trinh and Soham Dhital (Year 9) – Gold HRRRT Awards

We would like to recognise the exceptional commitment of Year 9 students Max Owen-Johnston, Charles Trinh, and Soham Dhital, who have all recently received a gold certificate for accumulating over 50 HRRRT points. These students have demonstrated consistent dedication to our college HRRRT values of High Expectations, Respect, Responsibility, Resilience, and Teamwork. Well done Max, Charles and Soham.

Alex Robertson (Year 9) and Hiro Hajinikitas (Year 10) - Outstanding Achievements in Humanities

This year, we had a number of students enrol in both the Australian Geography Competition and the Australian History Competition. All of our students performed exceptionally well in these academic tests. Special congratulations go to Alex Robertson and Hiro Hajinikitas, who achieved within the top 1% of all participants nationwide.

As we approach the end of the year, it’s important for all students to begin preparing for the upcoming Semester 2 exams, which will commence in Week 6 – November 11th

To help students succeed, below are some study tips to guide their preparation:

  • Create a Study Schedule: Organise your time by creating a realistic study timetable. Prioritise subjects and topics that need the most attention. The earlier you dedicate time to your study, the more time you are able to allocate.
  • Set Clear Goals: Break down your study sessions into manageable chunks, with clear objectives for each session.
  • Take Breaks: Balance is key - study for a set amount of time, and then take short breaks to recharge.
  • Stay Active: Regular physical activity can help reduce stress and improve focus, so be sure to incorporate movement into your routine.
  • Ask for Help: Don’t hesitate to seek clarification from teachers if you're unsure about any topics. Homework club is a great way to connect with your teachers during your studies.

Good luck with your preparations and remember that your teachers and support staff are here to assist you along the way.

Senior School Report

Congratulations to students for finishing Term 3.  For both Year 11s and 12s with Term 4 soon approaching, we wish them well for exam preparation.

We encourage all students to go to revision lectures run during holidays. Details were shared in previous compass post. Some teachers will run practice exam sessions for Year 12s and students doing Unit 3/4 during Week 2 of the holidays.  We encourage students to attempt the SAC s so that they have an opportunity to experience sitting exams under exam conditions.

Students are encouraged to take time and relax as well during the holidays.

All VCE students must work on the  feedback given by their teachers so that they can grow. Some tips for Term 3 holidays  :

Map out your daily schedule on paper.

Maintain a regular sleep pattern.

Start doing practice questions from past exam papers.

And most importantly, please reach out to the Senior School Team if you need any support.
