WADL Debating League

The second finals round of the WA Debating League (WADL) Schools Debating Competition (SDC) took place on Tuesday evening at Mount Lawley Senior High School. Many thanks to the family and friends who came in support.  We are very excited to announce that two of our debating teams have made it through to the quarter-finals. Commiserations to JTC5, who were outstanding in a very close debate against Perth Modern Senior High School - missing out on a quarter finals place by only two points. Over two hundred teams have participated in this year’s competition, and we have two debating teams in the final eight - the only competing school to have multiple teams in the finals for this division. An outstanding achievement to be sure.

Congratulations to:

  • JTC 4
    • Luke Nicol
    • Henry McGlue
    • Zachary Sartorello
    • Christopher Tan

  • JTC 7
    • Olivia Ince
    • Charlie Tegg
    • Jenna Romano
    • Emily Rintoul

The quarter finals will be held this Tuesday, 20 August at Perth Modern Senior High School. WADL has yet to release fixtures, but students will be notified through Teams as and when their debate times are confirmed. We wish all our debating finalists the best of luck.

Magis Academic Challenge

In celebration of National Science Week, our Magis Academic Challenge tested students’ knowledge of all things STEM. This was our fifth Academic House Challenge for the year. Each Homeroom nominates up to 10 students who take part in a quiz testing student’s knowledge across a number of disciplines. Students receive valuable House points for participating, and points for place positions. These points go towards awarding not only the Magis Academic Cup, for the highest achieving House, but also the overall College House Shield. Over 280 students from Years 7 through to Year 12 took part in the STEM Challenge and we congratulate the following Year group winners:

  • Year 7: Louis McLoughlin (Ward)
  • Year 8: Nicholas Tang (St Louis)
  • Year 9: Charlie Lennon (Koolyangarra) and Alyssa Mignacca (St. Louis)
  • Year 10: Deiran Raman (Loyola)
  • Year 11: Madeleine Nankivell (St. Louis)
  • Year 12: Gemma Bailey (Loreto)

Congratulations to St. Louis House – who were the overall champions for the STEM challenge. Pictured is Miss Erin Basile’s Homeroom, Year 12 Loreto, celebrating their win – as the top performing Year 12 Homeroom.

It has been wonderful to see a number of our lower school students participating in ‘Girls Day Out’. This online event was created to inspire girls aged 10 to 14 through Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. Students who participated in the Imagineering Adventure, were able to visit metaverse worlds and explore activities along the way. This year’s theme was ‘Species survival' more than sustainability. The message is that the greatest impact on any species in the world, plant or animal, is us. We hope those who participated in this event had lots of fun!

What’s happening next week?

It is going to be a very big week for Magis! Besides the quarter-finals of WADL SDC, our Creative Edge students will be competing in the Regional Finals of Creative Edge Thinking at Curtin University. Our Tournament of Minds STEM team will be in their final rehearsals for their competition, which will take place the following week at ECU Joondalup. Whilst our Junior Ethics Teams, Junior Stretch and British Parliamentary Debating Teams will also be busy preparing for their respective upcoming events.

MAGIS: OPPORTUNITIES TO DO MORE!

Harvard Crimson

The Harvard Crimson Global Essay Competition provides a platform for young, ambitious high school students to exercise their writing skills and compete with students from all over the world. This competition encourages students to challenge themselves and explore different writing styles to ultimately strengthen their writing skills. The competition features two key rounds, the regional qualifiers held throughout five regions, followed by the global finals. To compete in the global round, participants must go head-to-head with local participants and place in the top 15 of the regional qualifiers. The top 12 submissions of the final 75, will be recognised in the global final and will win awesome prizes. As Harvard registration opens 1 October 2024 and closes 31 January 2025, we asked that students (aged 13-18) submit their expression of interest to the Head of Magis by Monday, 9 September 2024. This will be followed by a series of meetings and training seminars in preparation for the competition. Regional qualifiers will be held in February 2025, with Globals held in March 2025.
