UPP Aspire Higher Incursion
Students in Level 5 were visited by a team from Unleashing Personal Potential (UPP) last Monday. In this whole day incursion, students learnt valuable leadership skills they will take with them through life, and more sooner, Grade 6. Activities ranged from group teamwork, paired ice breaker activities and ended the session with a reflection of themselves as leaders, and more specifically, what kind of leader they are. An important take away from the session was that students will change their leadership style as they grow.
Literacy
This learning cycle included continuing improvements in students Oral Reading Fluency and reading prosody. Students are engaging in the goal focused aspects of our reading initiative in Level 5, articulating their personal goals to their reading partner before commencing in a read aloud.
In Writing, we are breaking apart our mentor text Iceberg, analysing key features such as personification, adjective use and imagery to convey hidden meanings. Students are now working on their plans for informative writing coming up towards the end of Term 3.
Maths
Our Level 5 students continue to immerse themselves in all areas of Mathematics. This cycle, we covered estimation and rounding as key mental skills to solve complex equations and worded problems. Students took part in fun activites and games relating to quick arithmetic as well as cooperation and healthy competition. One game in particular, a fun spin on Snakes and Ladders, saw students apply the 4 operations to their dice rolls in order to move up and down the board. We look forward to our final topic if the Term in mapping and grid referencing.
Inquiry
Wilko and Safety Sue returned in Week 8, taking our students down to Half Moon Bay to discuss the History and Geography of the local land. Connections to the First Nations People, historical artefacts, convict brick hunts and erosion were but a few topics discussed and illustrated to the students. Highlights from the day included learning the history of the warship Cerberus, how erosion shapes landforms and what sea wall bricks are from the Old Melbourne Gaol.
Kitchen / Garden
Mr Marco and the Level 5's were back in the kitchen this cycle. Pork Dumplings were on the menu, and no complaints were voiced by the students. Their technique was enhanced this week, needing to slice and dice the vegatables extra fine. The student's knife skills, cleaning ability and most importantly, their cooperation in the kitchen is improving every time they enter the kitchen.
