St Mary of the Cross MacKillop

St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, is Australia’s first saint and her feast day was celebrated  last Thursday 8th August.

St Mary was born on January 15th 1842 in Fitzroy Melbourne, Victoria. As a nun, she founded the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart. The Sisters of St Joseph founded a number of schools throughout Australia and their work continues today across the world. She was beautified by Pope John Paul II in January 1995 and was canonised on 17 October 2010. She is the first Australian to be recognised as a Saint by the Catholic Church. St Mary died on August 8th 1909, the date on which her Feast Day is annually celebrated.
