Junior and Intermediate Boys State Netball

Last Tuesday our Junior and Intermediate Boys journeyed to Melbourne to compete in the State Netball Championships.

Our Year 7/8 team entered the tournament buzzing with excitement!

In Game 1 the boys hit the court running with an explosive start. Keoni's sharpshooting and Jett's solid defence under the ring kept us competitive, but despite their best efforts, the boys faced a tough loss against Patterson River.

In Game 2, the fire alarm cut things short, resulting in a draw.

Game 3 was a nail-biter! But our SJC team proved too strong and edged out a narrow victory against Christian College Geelong. Charlie shone with superb intercepts and great organisation on the court, while Marlon dominated with his rebounding and shooting skills. Nate was crucial in recovering possession from our opponents, turning defence into offence.

The boys secured another strong win, this time against Flinders College, in Game 4. Paddy’s move to GA was a game-changer, transforming our scoring opportunities while Charlie continued his defensive dominance, helping to seal the victory.

In our final showdown, Keoni was on fire with accurate shooting, and Will controlled the center with finesse. Lynk’s second-half entrance was electric, bringing a surge of energy that was great to see.

Although we narrowly missed out on a semi-final berth, the team’s sportsmanship was truly commendable. From shaking hands, to thanking umpires, and ensuring the stadium was left in top condition - the boys were a pure joy to watch!

Our 9/10 boys wiped the sleep out of their eyes to get a point in the winning column nice and early against Crusoe College. Some exceptional shooting from ‘The Celebrator’ Kervin and Mitch helped to get us over the line here.

A slow start to our second game against St Ignatius College cost us dearly, with a fire alarm and emergency exit from the arena causing the game to come to a halt just after half time, removing any chance of a St Joes fight back.

Xav and Liams' defence set the tone early in game 3, and the injection of Dhara into C position helped to inspire a gallant victory over Patterson River.

The two Jacks on the wings, sparked excitement amongst the group in Game 4, combined with some dead eye shooting from Jett leading us to a strong victory over St Monica’s.

As the confidence within the group built throughout the day, the skills from the boys really started to shine in Game 5. Beaconhills College Berwick proved to be an extremely tough opponent, however the defence of Xav and some clutch shooting from the boys in the ring led us to a stirring 1 point victory. Jye and Liam were also very valuable.

St Mary’s College were up next in game 6, against a flying St Joes. Ben found his calling in defence, whilst Mitch was lights out from the arc, complementing a strong team victory to put us at the top of the table in Group 1!

A strong first half performance in Game 7 from Charlie and Jack B set the tone as we proved too strong for St Paul’s Anglican Grammar. Campbell continued his exceptional form throughout the day leading us to a big win.

The team then progressed to the semi final against Luther College. Gallant is not enough to describe the efforts of the boys in this game but unfortunately they narrowly went down by two goals.

It was a brilliant day and the group were an absolute pleasure to coach. Well done, team!

Year 7 Boys AFL State Quarter Final

The conditions were wet and windy for our Year 7 Boys in Ballarat last Friday at the State AFL Quarter Finals.

Our St Joseph’s College boys came out of the blocks strong and claimed an early lead against Emmanuel.

The second and third quarters were a tight tussle and the boys were required to play hard, tough football in order to maintain level scores going into the last quarter.

But unfortnuately our boys couldn’t hold on and Emmanuel kicked three goals from three inside 50's in the last quarter to win the game.

It was an incredible team game and the boys should be extremely proud of the way they conducted themselves and were gracious in defeat.

Arli was prolific in the midfield and was well supported by Ollie and Mason. Taj was brilliant across half back as well as Sam Henson who continually tried all day.

Thanks to our coaches Mr Butler and Mr Carnie.

Senior Girls AFL Quarter Finals

It was a foggy start for our Senior Girls as they boarded the bus for Ballarat last Wednesday. But thankfully the sun was shining when they arrived at Western Oval (which isn’t often the case in Ballarat)!

In the first game against Ballarat High School there was a huge advantage due to the wind with one end being the main scoring end. Lexi came out ready to play, leading by example, until the rest of the girls kicked into gear! In the end the girls won comfortably thanks to a real team effort with Stella kicking 4, Makenna kicking 2 and Grace M, Lexi and Bree all scoring 1 goal each.

SJC vs Ballarat High School: 9.11.64 - 4.3.27

In their second game the girls faced off against Strathmore who were a very strong team. They were quick, leaving our girls chasing all day and unfortunately no goals were scored.

Everyone played their part well though and the girls should be very proud of their efforts.

SJC vs Strathmore: 0.2.2 to 7.7. 49

Best players for the day were Lexi, Sage, Grace M, Tilly and Molly. Ash was excellent in defence trapping the ball on many occasions and kicking it out to the middle. Makenna was also dominant taking strong marks in both the forward and back lines.

Well done to the Senior Girls team and huge thank you to our Coaches Mr Carnie and Ms Orton.

Year 8 Boys AFL Quarter Final

Our Year 8 Boys put in a gallant effort at the state quarter finals in Ballarat on Wednesday but unfortunately their 2024 football campaign has come to an end.

The boys started on the back foot in the first quarter with Emmanuel taking control early through the midfield.

With the scoreboard level at half time, on a windy day favouring one end - the team knew the second half was going to be tough.

The third quarter saw Emmanuel kick ahead after some good play and our boys went in at three quarter time 15 points down.

The boys had their opportunities in the last quarter but could only cut the margin to 8 points.

It wasn’t the result they were hoping for but the boys all played well as a team and should be very proud of their efforts!

Jackson and Lyncoln were impressive in the middle with Jett providing good service in the ruck. Henry was fantastic across half back along with Harry and Charlie was fantastic forward and going through the middle.

Arrival Time: Students are expected to arrive by 9:00am - either by being dropped off directly at Jack Eddy Oval or by catching a bus from their respective campuses. (*Please note that students are not permitted to drive themselves to the event.)
Departure Time: Buses will be boarding for SJC at 2:30pm, students leaving directly from the event will need to stay at the event until dismissed.

Weather Forecast: The weather forecast for Monday suggests it will be overcast and around 18 degrees, so please ensure that your child is dressed appropriately for the conditions. We recommend that students bring hats, sunscreen, and plenty of water to stay hydrated throughout the day.

Attendance: This is a compulsory school event, and attendance will be considered in future school sports tryouts. If a student is ill and unable to attend, a doctor’s certificate or statutory declaration must be provided and submitted to the child's Learning Mentor.

Parent Attendance: We welcome parents to attend the event. However, to ensure the safety of all students, we ask that you remain in the designated viewing areas and refrain from entering the track or field. This adherence to child safety standards helps us maintain a secure environment for everyone involved.
