CNPS Athletics Day

We were fortunate to have fantastic weather yesterday for our Athletics Day for Years 3 to 6. Our students did us proud as they cheered each other on and congratulated those who won a place.

A big thank you to Chris Atkins, Maddi Davis, Rachel Mathews, Kristen Dearricott and Joan Perryman for their work preparing for the day.

Twilight Storytime

Last night the Foundation students and their families attended Twilight Storytime in our school library. The event was hosted by our amazing Librarian, Kim along with Jacqui and Eoghan. This event is a fantastic opportunity to promote and celebrate the importance of reading and enjoying books.

ICAS - International Competitions and Assessments for Schools

ICAS is an online academic competition that is designed to assess students’ higher order thinking and problem-solving skills in English, Mathematics, Science, Writing, Spelling Bee, and Digital Technologies.

This year is our school’s second year of involvement in ICAS and many of our students signed up to take part in it. So far three of the six assessments have been conducted with two more weeks remaining. We are proud of the way our participating students are demonstrating the value of resilience as they take part in this competition.

National Day Against Bullying and Violence

Tomorrow is the National Day Against Bullying and Violence. Bullying can happen at home, at school or online. It is never okay and it is not a normal part of growing up.

There is a new nationally agreed definition of bullying which all Australian schools now use:

Bullying is an ongoing and deliberate misuse of power in relationships through repeated verbal, physical and/or social behaviour that intends to cause physical, social and/or psychological harm. It can involve an individual or a group misusing their power, or perceived power, over one or more persons who feel unable to stop it from happening.

Bullying can happen in person or online, via various digital platforms and devices and it can be obvious (overt) or hidden (covert). Bullying behaviour is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time (for example, through sharing of digital records).

Bullying of any form or for any reason can have immediate, medium and long-term effects on those involved, including bystanders. Single incidents and conflict or fights between equals, whether in person or online, are not defined as bullying.

The 3 main features of bullying are:

  • the misuse of power in a relationship
  • it is ongoing and repeated
  • it involves behaviours that can cause harm.

There are four main types of bullying behaviour:

Physical – examples include: hitting, pushing, shoving or intimidating or otherwise physically hurting another person, damaging or stealing their belongings. It includes threats of violence.

Verbal/Written – examples include: name-calling or insulting someone about an attribute, quality or personal characteristic.

Social (sometimes called relational or emotional bullying) – examples include: deliberately excluding someone, spreading rumours, sharing information that will have a harmful effect on the other person and/or damaging a person’s social reputation or social acceptance.

Cyberbullying – any form of bullying behaviour that occurs online or via a mobile device. It can be verbal or written, and can include threats of violence as well as images, videos and/or audio. For more information, refer to Cyberbullying.

Staff Professional Learning

Safe Schools Conference

On Monday and Tuesday this week, Kara and Billy attended the Safe Schools State-wide Training at the Melbourne Museum.

Visit to Westgarth Primary School

On Monday Maddi visited Westgarth Primary School to meet with Learning Specialist Ben Jones to share teaching practice and assessment in Mathematics. Maddi and Ben have formed a community of practice whereby our two schools will work together and share resources.

Area Executive Director Visit to CNPS

Yesterday our Area Executive Director, Stacey Gabriel visited our school accompanied by our Senior Education Improvement Leader, Jane Grieg Hancock. They both met with Jane and Rachel and then toured the school and met all of the Foundation and Year 1/2 classes. Unfortunately the timing of the visits clashed with our Athletics Day and they were unable to meet our classes from Years 3 to 6.

Our students charmed both Stacey and Jane as they shared their learning in a very entertaining way. We are always proud to conduct tours of  our school and show off our amazing staff and students.
