TMOS (Transformative Meta-Optical Systems) Incursion

Thank you to Jenny Elz for organising the amazing optics incursion for our Year 5 and 6 students last week.

The Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Transformative Meta-Optical Systems (TMOS) aims to develop the next generation of miniaturised optical systems with functionalities beyond what is conceivable today.

Their research outcomes will underpin future technologies, including real-time holographic displays, artificial vision for autonomous systems to see the invisible, remote Earth observation, and  wearable medical devices.

Thank you to Ben Russell, for reaching out to Jenny to arrange the session. Melbourne born but Warrnambool raised, Ben Russell, has had his mind set on physics ever since the BBC documentary ‘Absolute Zero’ premiered 2008. Ben joined TMOS in 2021 with the commencement of his PhD in physics, hoping to build on the research groundwork laid down during his master’s degree.

The students thoroughly enjoyed this engaging show. Hopefully some were inspired to follow Ben and his peers into a future which includes Science and research!

Year 4B - Feathers, Fur or Leaves

During Term 3, Year 4 have been learning about ‘Feathers, Fur or Leaves’ which dives deep into looking at how scientists classify animals and plants. Year 4B were lucky enough to have Preston, his father Allan and Jack the snake come in for a visit during reptile week. Surprisingly, most kids lined up for a feel of Jack’s scales and quickly realised he is a cold-blooded animal. Even more surprising was that Ms Thompson lined up for her very first ever hold of a snake and even managed to fake a smile.
