THE MAGIC OF BOOKS !

Book Week 2023

Well done to our Grade 1 and 2 students for celebrating Book Week by coming to school dressed as their favourite book character! There were so many great costumes. It was pleasing to see our children’s enthusiasm and love of reading.

The theme this year was ‘Read, Grow Inspire!’

The children and our school community enjoyed a parade in the morning and ‘Story Time’ with our Principal, Mr Webber (Willy Wonka), followed by a day of activities. We also enjoyed a live stage performance by ‘Tony Bones’, a production of the book – Jorn’s Magnificent Imagination written by Coral Vass and Illustrated by Nicky Johnston.

Numeracy

Grade 1s have been enjoying their unit on place value reinforcing that 10 of these is one of those and being able to identify how many hundreds, tens and ones in a number by partitioning. Students have enjoyed lots of hands on lessons using concrete materials and practising skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s forwards and backwards to and from 100.

Grade 2s have been learning about multiplication and using different strategies to multiply such as making arrays, skip counting on number lines, repeated addition and making groups. They have learned about the commutative property of multiplication e.g. 3x5 is the same as 5x3 and enjoyed lots of hands on activities to reinforce their learning.

Literacy

The Grade 1 and 2 students have continued their focus on persuasive texts and persuasive letters. We have had some very persuasive letters about playing games on the oval with Mr Webber, having longer recess at school and having 3 day sleepovers at friend's houses to name a few. Students have enjoyed thinking about their opinions and writing strong reasons backed up by examples before writing a closing paragraph restating their opinion. Some of the Grade 2's worked hard to type up their persuasive texts on laptops and have displayed them in the classroom window.
