3/4 News

Recently the 3/4 Community went on an excursion to the DRI and to the Hastings foreshore boardwalk.

At the DRI we learnt a lot of new information about seals and whales and how to identify them. Inside the building, we explored bones and exhibits of marine life that are found in Westernport Bay. We played a really fun game that taught us about predators in the Bay and how the small marine creatures can be protected by hiding among the sea grass. The mangroves are important to the sea grass because their roots slow down the power of the waves so the sea grass can grow without being pulled out of the sand.

We then completed the boardwalk from the DRI all the way to Jack’s Beach-it was a long walk!

Along the way we saw black swans, bandicoot diggings, salt plains, mangroves, a possums nest, mud flats and we could see across to French Island. There were lots of native birds picking at the seeds in the dry grasses along the walk. At Jack’s beach, we explored the mud flats where the mangroves grow. There are so many different things to see in Westernport Bay.

You should go and explore it!
