What a busy few weeks we have had in the Health & Physical Education Curriculum!

Curriculum Update

Foundation:

Over past few weeks, the students have completed a unit around dribbling, passing and catching. To commence the unit, students explored freely using different objects on which hand they preferred to dribble with. Once they developed confidence with this, they worked with a partner and practised first with a tennis ball and then with the basketball. As we progressed further into the lesson the student's learning was then extended to allow them to move around and dribbling. They were also set certain objective while dribbling such as completing five cross-over dribbles at the cone.

The last lesson saw the students learn two different types of passes, the chest and bounce pass. The children worked together to grow their confidence in executing each pass. We first used a soft gator skin ball and then progressed to using size 5 basketballs.

The students completed their term health task which asked them to pack a healthy lunch from given foods. The students had to cut and paste those foods on to their lunch box and aim to use each section of the lunch box to show their brain food, snacks and lunch.

Year Three/Four:

Over the past few weeks, the Level 3-4 students have focused on building their skills and knowledge involved with the game volleyball. We are fortunate to have an accredited external volleyball coach deliver this program. During the first sessions, the students predominately focused on setting as it is deemed one of the most important shots in the game. The students worked in small groups to practise the skill before applying it to a modified game.

In the second session, the group learned and applied the dig and spiking skill in small groups before applying it to a modified game. The first two sessions set the students up to play a full-scale game in week three.

During the third lesson the students were given the opportunity to apply their learnings from the previous sessions to a game of volleyball. The growth and development the students displayed was fantastic as was their teamwork skills.

Mountain Bike Elective

Our select 3-6 students have been working hard during our elective sessions. They have continued to conduct their bike safety checks at the beginning of each lesson.

Over the past few weeks, the prime focus has been on braking control and gear changing. The students practised these skills in small spaces/zones before applying them to some free riding on the oval. The purpose of these sessions was to enable students to understand how important braking and gear changing would be on a trail ride.

Level 34 Hooptime

On Friday 1st September 18 of our 34 students represented our school at the Hooptime Carnival. Our students were spectacular and must be commended on their ability to work together and collaborate so respectfully. From the beginning it was clear our students were eager to work together and bring one another into the game. Due to this, we were so successful over the day. The Upwey Storm just missed out on finals but grew in confidence with each game they played and the Upwey Suns went through undefeated and will now progress to the Division stage (TBC). Again, congratulations to all students involved, you should all be very proud.

A special mention to all of the family members who came to support on the day, we appreciate it.

District Athletics

On Thursday 31st August 49 students represented our school at the District Athletics Carnival at Knox Athletics track. I must say, as a school we could not be prouder of our student's effort, team spirit and sportsmanship on the day. We have some fantastic results over the course of the day with 11 students progressing to the Division Stage on Wednesday 13th September at Bill Sewart Athletics Track. We wish all of these students the best of luck.

A special mention to all of the family members who attended on the day to support the students. We are very lucky to have such a wonderful and supportive community. GO USPS

Division Athletics

On Wednesday 13th September a group of our students represented USPS at the Division Athletics Carnival. It was a glorious day to watch out students display their talents. From the beginning to the events conclusion, our students were respectable, enthusiastic and determined competitors. We had some amazing results over the day with a number of our students progressing through to the Regional Stage on Thursday 19th October at Doncaster Athletics track. We wish all of our competitors the best of luck at the next stage as we all know they will represent our school in an amazing fashion. GO USPS
