Mathematics - Term 3

This term in Year Two we have been exploring topics from Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability.

In Number and Algebra, students have been applying their number sense and strategies for counting and representing numbers and exploring the properties of numbers. We have been focussing on fractions, addition and subtraction and building to automatic recall of number facts to 20.

Students have enjoyed completing a lot of hands on activities such as drawing cards to make the biggest number or rolling dice then adding the faces to create the biggest total.

We have also been looking at collections of money for recognition and counting collections to find the total. We have been challenged to make specific totals as many different ways as we can. We have begun to look at the change given when a purchase is made.

In Measurement and Geometry, students have been developing their understanding of time including reading and recording time on both digital and analogue clocks.  They have also been working on location and directions using programable beebots.

Book Week

On Thursday 24th August, our school celebrated book week with a dress up day. The students looked amazing in their outfits. As part of the day, students shared the characters and books that they represented.

Readers Theatre

Year Two students have been developing fluency when reading aloud by participating in Readers' Theatre workshops. They have learnt about presenting to an audience, reading at an appropriate pace and volume, working on simple presentation gestures such as facial expressions and hand movements and working collaboratively as a team. Students identified the features of how a good team works and reflected on their own positive behaviours for learning when participating in these lessons. It was exciting to see our students present to their peers and demonstrated the resilience which they have built throughout the year!

Fathers' Day Celebration

Thankyou to all the fathers and special visitors who came to help us celebrate Fathers' Day. We hope you had a lovely time. Here are some of the people who visited the grade 2 area

Damper Making:

As part of our Inquiry learning unit 'Now and Then', Year Two students made cross curricular links when writing procedures following participation in 'Damper Bread' making. Students were assisted by teachers to carefully measure ingredients and follow a method from the given recipe. They kneaded the dough into small bread rolls and experienced the varying textures that were formed by different groups. After working together in groups and sharing the jobs equally, we cooked the damper (very slowly) and students were given the opportunity to take a bread roll home for a taste.

In the subsequent writing lessons, students learnt about writing procedures in chronological order, using verbs to describe exactly what needed to be done and adding in adverbs to describe how actions needed to be carried out. Students then put all of their newly learnt information onto the correct structure of a procedure.

Take Home Readers

As part of InitiaLit-2, students have free-choice of short and extended chapter books to take home and read. Year Two students are able to choose up to four readers from school to take home weekly and read nightly. Students in Year Two are also free to choose books from home to read each night if they wish. Students who choose their readers on a Monday are required to return them the following Monday. After reading, please record the name of the book in the InitiaLit Home Reading Diary for the day.
