Primary School

Book Review Party - Tomorrow!

Primary parents are invited to a Book Review Party, hosted by both Jodie Bennett, and the author of Raising Tech-Healthy Humans, Daniel Sih. This parent only event is open to all our parents and is aimed particularly at Primary-aged parents. Daniel will be discussing sensitive topics and we welcome open conversations with families to support one another in navigating technology and children. As Daniel says in his book, "It's easy to feel out of control raising children in our tech-dominated society. We want our kids to enjoy the online world without losing the wonders of life beyond a screen."

The event will be held tomorrow, Thursday 17 August at 6pm in the onsite Connections Café. Our Principal, Jodie Bennett looks forward to seeing parents on the night and we will serve a light supper whilst we discuss topics covered in the book.

Investigating Different Materials in Grade 1

Over the last three weeks Grade 1 students have been investigating different materials in our Unit of Inquiry – ‘The properties of materials can determine how they are used’. When starting a Unit of Inquiry, we spend time as a class unpacking the central idea and lines of inquiry. Our lines of inquiry focus on the different types of materials, properties of materials and the suitability of materials for different purposes. After spending time thinking and unpacking these statements the students freely shared what they already knew and asked any questions they had. Some of the questions students asked were, “Are all things made from material?", "What is glass made of?" and "What is the strongest material?”

To help answer these questions our teaching team put together a Material Wall, filled with different objects made from different materials such as plastic, metal, wood and fabric. The Material Wall has allowed students to have hands-on experiences exploring the different materials and to predict what each object is made of. To look deeper into what these objects are made from, Grade 1 were able to use iPads with microscope attachments to look at the fibres that make up the object. The students enjoyed this time predicting and analysing what the objects were made of and were amazed to see the tiny fibers in each material. The students had a wonderful time exploring and sharing their discoveries with each other and a highlight was playing a game of 'Guess That Material' from photos the students had taken.

Can you guess the object and material from these pictures?

Primary Assembly

Yesterday we welcomed Johanna from an organisation called Compassion. During this term we are focusing on the core value of compassion and it was only fitting that we had Johanna come and discuss ways in which the organisation supports others.

Johanna explained that every child is valuable and should have opportunities to thrive. We want to help children less fortunate than we are.

The assembly was run by the Prep students and Dr Klaver showed students a Science experiment for Science Week. Students were presented with Learner Profile and Achievement in Reading certificates. A special 'thank you' certificate was presented to the Primary Rise students from The Royal Children's Hospital Foundation, for funds raised in their fundraiser bake sale.

Head Lice (Repeat)

Head Lice have been found amongst the children in the Primary classes. Please check your child’s hair today!

Under Department of Education and Department of Health and Human Services policy, your child is required to remain away from school until after use of a recommended treatment and an attempt to remove all of the eggs (nits).
