Aboriginal Studies

Year 8

In Week 5, Year 8 Aboriginal Studies students were given the opportunity to explore the local Aboriginal history that was presented to Elders during the NAIDOC week celebration held at school. They learned about this local culture by completing a 'scavenger hunt' for information.

On Tuesday 22 August, Year 8 Aboriginal Studies had the opportunity to visit the Dhiyaan Centre in Moree to learn about local Oral and Written Expression. Students were able to look at artefacts, view videos and photos and talk to both Jett (St Philomena's AEA) and Raquel (from the Dhiyaan Centre) about local histories. The most enjoyed activity was the family tree worksheet students had the chance to fill in. Families may expect questions about ancestry!

Geography

Today Year 10 Geography had Kerrie Saunders and David Preston from the Department of Planning and Environment visit and do an interactive lesson about the history and changes that the Gwydir Wetlands have undergone over time. They also discussed Aboriginal Peoples connection and songlines connected to this land. This lesson was done in preparation for an excursion to the Wetlands that will happen in Week 9.

Year 8 & Year 1 Yarning Story Sharing

In Week 6, as part of book week, Year 8 shared Aboriginal Dreamtime stories with Year 1. This was a valuable experience for both the Year 1s and Year 8s.
